The Plitvice Lakes are located in the southern part of Mala Kapela mountain range in Croatia. It is a wooded mountain area with 16 lakes of different sizes separated into an upper and lower cluster . These lakes are a result of the joining of several small rivers and subterranean karst rivers.
On April 8, 1949 the Plitvice Lakes were declared a national park due to their outstanding and picturesque series of tufa lakes, caves, connected by waterfalls. It is the larges, oldest and most visited Croatian national park.

Swimming in the Plitvice Lakes is strictly forbidden. More than 120 species of birds surround the Plitvice waterfalls and there are a lot of wolves, deer, bears, wild cats and many more, as well as 109 different species of plants.
Throughout history they have been influenced by humans. They were never an abandoned place because they are located along an important traffic route. There are a lot of hotels and tourist houses there, as well as a tourist resort called Medveđak.
