Our school council!

Mr Clarke would like to say a massive congratulations to everybody who applied for a position on school council this year. The voting in class was closely fought and was handled in a mature way by every child in school. I was extremely impressed by everybody who took part.

The School Council's first task will be to create an anti-bullying campaign that will be used throughout school. We will be meeting several times a term with the aim of making children's ideas a reality. I am really looking forward to the children having a louder voice around school and I can't wait to hear their ideas.

Poppy Class - September 2020

In Poppy class this month we have been learning on our phonics. Each week we have a sound of the week which we learn to say, read and write. So far these have been ‘m’, ‘a’, and ‘s’.

It is important for us in Poppy class to have lots of physical and sensory time so we have been enjoying our new outdoor equipment and some super messy play. The children particularly enjoyed playing in the shaving foam, making sure their hands weren’t the only part covered.

Our story has been ‘The Owl Babies’, which the children have thoroughly enjoyed. As part of this the children went outdoors and found some leaves to make lovely pictures of the three owl babies, Sarah, Percy and Bill.

Blackrock Class - September 2020

Welcome back! Blackrock have been working so hard and we are very proud of what they have achieved. We have been engineers in DT and made spinners, Physicists in Science and explored slip and slide. As musicians, we have been rocking out to the ring ting ting of metal. As artists we have been learning the art of embossing.
Thank you, Blackrock, for making it such an awesome introduction to the term and I am so impressed with your continued effort to read at home every day.

Crooklets - September 2020

Welcome back everyone! We are having a fantastic time in Crooklets class and I am so proud of all the children for their wonderful attitudes and excitement for learning.

As engineers, in DT, we made a pencil spinner, but who could make theirs turn for the longest? The winning result…Nina and Alana’s! Later in the week, we also busted out the hack saws to make carts! Well done all of team Crooklets - design development extraordinaries!

Our English learning has been a feast for the ears. We made our own beautiful (loud) rhythms, beats and booms with various metal instruments to help our poems (inspired by The Sound Collector and The Dream Drummer Girl).

Finally, check out our awesome science investigations. Careful setting up, measuring and recording has seen us making some awesome links between how things move on different surfaces and about forces in general.

Duckpool Class - September 2020

Duckpool children have made an impressive start in Year Three. They have “wowed” us with their enthusiasm and resilience in school, after so long away.

In class, we have been looking at Mighty Metals, exploring a range of exciting science investigations. Last week, we investigated forces in our PE lesson.

We also looked at which surfaces have the most friction when a model car runs over them. Archie and Tia are investigating a concrete surface. Using our new ICT skills, we then recorded the results on a table on Google Sheets – a spreadsheet. Next, we are making our own model vehicles so watch this space!

In English, we have been writing poems based on “the Sound Collector” – a poem by Roger McGough. Our steps to success included using nouns, verbs and rhyme. Here is a poem written by Ronja and Hannah, telling the tale of how silence descends on BPA!

School Sounds
A robber called this morning, She crept into the school, And snatched up all the sounds, She didn’t know the rule.
The talking of the teachers, The rattling of the lock, The brrrrmmm of the cars, And the ticking of the clock!
The scratching of the pencils, The banging of the trays, The whispering of the children, Learning every day.
The crunching of the crisps, The slurping of the drinks, The sizzling of the sausages, The gurgling of the sinks.

Summerleaze Class - September 2020

Summerleaze began their year with an epic battle between the Celts and the Romans for their Curriculum Project ‘I am Warrior’.

In English, they have become Roman soldiers and written diary entries before and after a battle. Here are just two examples.

Dear Diary.
Preparations for tomorrow are all ready. After eating the most amazing meal I’ve ever had, I cleaned my mammoth, sharp sword. Then I collected all my shiny, heavy armour together. I feel mad because I want to kill the Celts so badly but at the same time, I am scared. I am about to sleep. Good night diary. I will write again soon. Elise

Dear Diary.
I have returned, drained and injured. The battle was extreme diary. As we continued to fight, a repulsive aroma of slain bodies punched us in the nose. We remained strong and loyal but then, thick, oozy blood squirted down my wounded leg. As I lay on the floor, I thought it would be the end for me! Luckily, I managed to fight for my life! A fellow Roman soldier towered over me, and then heaved me up and took me to a little shelter the weird thing was he didn’t say a word to me but he still he still managed to save my life though! I must rest and repair for the clean-up now diary. Bye for now. Jimi

Sandymouth Class - September 2020

Sandymouth have made a flying start to Year 4! The children settled in remarkably well after what, for many of them, was a very long break. I hope we all feel proud of them for “just getting on with it” in a new and ever changing environment.

We have enjoyed our “I am Warrior!” project about Romans and Celts. We had a battle/ambush which was great fun. We never even got close to deciding who had won!

We are also learning about electricity in science. The children enjoyed making circuits and testing conductivity.

The children have enjoyed being back in school and re-establishing friendship networks. We have had activities to develop RTime (relationship) skills and PSHE. We have already had three stars of the week and earned extra golden time for good learning.
Overall, it has been a great start to the term. Well done Sandymouth!

Northcott Class - September 2020

In Northcott we have had the most amazing start to our term launching our learning project.
It’s time to suspend your disbelief and open your mind. We’re going on a magical journey to Alchemy Island. Can you find the gold hidden deep within the island’s mysterious landscape? The only way is to study the map, unravel the riddle and begin your adventure.

On the way, you must do all you can to learn about gold and master the ancient art of alchemy. Be creative and try to impress the island’s team of ace alchemists. Will they praise your scientific expertise? What if there were a video game version of Alchemy Island? Could you compose a stunning soundtrack to bring this mysterious landscape to life? You’ve got your map, coordinates and everything else you need to make your way across Alchemy Island. Don’t forget to pack your imagination. Got your suitcase ready? Then let the journey begin.

So far we have loved our introduction to the Island.
We have also started reading our class novel The Nowhere Emporium which is full of intrigue and curiosity and is really hooking us in. We can't wait to find out what happens next. Here are some fun facts for you to read.

Crackington Class - September 2020

It’s been an exciting start in Crackington Class! We’ve thrown ourselves into our new topic, ‘Alchemy Island’, and have already been working out how to read 6-figure grid references in order to find the gold hidden on the island. In preparation for finding the gold we’ve also been learning how to separate different materials, as well as learning how to decipher riddles to find the secret codes and messages!
Our class book ‘The Hobbit’ has also filled our heads with riddles and treasure (as well as teaching us how to use dwarf runes!), and in English we’ve been creating and describing our own fantasy portals and landscapes (see below for some of our best sentences so far). In Maths we’ve been learning all about 5 digit numbers, as well as finding out who the early champions are in Times Table Shootout!
The children in Crackington Class have come back to school ready to learn and full of respect for each other, so we’ve been having a fantastic time – let’s hope for a really exciting and productive year.
