October 2020
Meet our new Head of School!
Hello everyone,
I just wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and to say what an honour it is to feature in this month’s edition of THE SPLASH! I really cannot wait to meet you all in January as the new Head of School at Bude Juniors.
Myself and my family (including Rosie our dog) have a big move ahead of us as we are from North Nottinghamshire (close to Sherwood Forest – Robin Hood country). It has been an ambition of ours to live close to the sea and we feel very lucky to have been given this opportunity.
Bude is a place that I hold dear to my heart as I have been visiting this stunning part of the world now for 30+ years. I even arranged my year 5 class to write to the year 5 class at Bude about 12 years ago when I was a trainee teacher. Those pupils wrote back sending leaflets they had designed all about their local area; they even sent some sound bites! The pupils were quite rightly very proud of where they lived. As a family, we very much look forward to becoming a part of this community.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and please make sure you come and introduce yourself in the new year.
Let’s hope for a happy and healthy 2021.

School Council
The first school council meeting of the term was held on Tuesday.

A chairperson, secretary and treasurer were appointed and the Council's first task as a group was discussed. All of the children brought some amazing ideas to the meeting and began to plan their school anti-bullying campaign.

The children also received their School Council badges. Look out for them being worn by the councillors around school and make sure you share your ideas with them.

Poppy Class - October 2020
It's been another busy, extremely quick month of learning, fun and exploration in Poppy Class!
We have celebrated Riley's birthday, welcomed Corey to the class and also Amy as an additional TA. We are continuing to enjoy sharing 'Owl Babies' at our storytime and listening to relaxing music in the sensory room during 'Shiny Time'
Our twice daily singing and signing word and number choice circle times continue to be extremely popular  - and we have progressed each week through another speed sound/letter to "down the body and a dot for the head" this week.
We have also been enjoying the garden when it has been dry enough and exploring sensory materials each Thursday afternoon in messy playtime - most recently smothering our feet in paint and then walking on an enormous piece of paper under our squidgy feet. We then washed our feet in warm, bubbly water!
Each afternoon we are active at soft play or PE, on the trim trail and in song choice time where we practice taking turns, counting and moving to the music! We think that Ella is our best pupil dancer and Gary can also really throw some shapes!
Alex has joined the School Council and has been absolutely smashing his
Times Tables Rock Stars! He has also been patiently writing an amazing
adventure story. We are excited about Corey joining us and he has already shown all the positive attitudes to learning that we expect from our pupils: cooperation, good listening, determination, resilience and persistence.
We are all looking forward to half-term and the excitement of Christmas thereafter.
Blackrock Class - October 2020
Throughout October in Blackrock we have been focusing on our topic of Mighty Metals. We have just finished reading our class book ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes and have been focusing on ways we can describe metal in English. Taking inspiration from ‘The Sound Collector’ by Roger McGough, we have written our own ‘Metal Collector’ poems, looking closely at verbs to describe the melting and manipulation of different metal materials.
The theme of Mighty Metals has also run through into our science, where we have been experimenting with magnets and searching the school for magnetic materials. We were very surprised to find there was some metal in the rope of the trim trail! Then we tried to measure the strength of our magnets with a force meter. It was a bit tricky to try and keep the paperclip on the magnet!
Crooklets Class - October 2020
Art & Design
We looked at techniques that Jewellers use when working with metal. We adapted these techniques to emboss and manipulate foil to make Iron Men images. They were very effective.
Science
Our science learning has been really exciting. We have investigated a wide range of magnets, trying to make them attract and repel. We made careful observations and reported our findings.
English
We wrote some fan-tas-tic intructions about how to catch an Iron Man. Our young writers really did themselves proud.
