The Pesach Story

Eight more times G-d sent plagues and Pharaoh said the Jewish people could go free, but each time he changed his mind.  Finally the plagues were too terrible and Pharaoh told the Jewish people to get out.

The Pharaoh made the Jewish people work very hard all the time!  They made bricks and built buildings and cities for the Pharaoh. They were not free to do what they wanted to do; the Jews could only do what the Pharaoh wanted them to do!

G-d picked a Jewish man named Moses to help. One day, Moses saw fire in a bush, but the bush wasn't burning up! G-d spoke to Moses from the bush and told him "Go tell Pharaoh to let my people go!"

The Jewish people crossed the sea walking on dry land between walls of water. G-d moved the big cloud behind them so that Pharaoh and his men could not see the Jews crossing the sea.

When Pharaoh woke up, all his water had turned into blood- YUCK! Pharaoh called Moses and told him that the Jewish people could leave Egypt, but when the blood turned back into water the Pharaoh changed his mind- the Jewish people had to stay and be slaves.

As the work got harder and harder, the Jewish people became very unhappy. They cried out to G-d for help.

Moses called the Jewish people and told them to pack their bags- it was time to leave Egypt.  They had to hurry before Pharaoh changed his mind again!  The people packed so quickly, they did not have time to let their bread dough rise, it came out flat- matzah!

Many years after Joseph died came a mean Egyptian king named Pharaoh. He was afraid of the Jewish people, there were so many of them! So he decided to make them slaves.

So, Moses went to the Pharaoh and said "let the Jewish people leave Egypt!" but the Pharaoh said "No!" Then, G-d sent a terrible thing called a plague to change Pharaoh's mind.

G-d closed the sea and Pharaoh and his men drowned in the water.  When they were safe and free on the other side the Jewish people sang songs and gave thanks to G-d.  They were happy to be free at last.

The Jewish people left Egypt walking as fast as they could. G-d lead the Jewish people with a big cloud.  Soon the Pharaoh changed his mind again! He and his men set out in chariots to bring the Jews back to Egypt.

So, G-d sent another plague and when Pharaoh woke up there were frogs everywhere! Pharaoh told Moses the Jews could leave, but when the frogs disappeared Pharaoh changed his mind again!

When the Jewish people saw Pharaoh and his men behind them they were very frightened! They called to Moses "What are we going to do?" Moses called to G-d for help. "Lift up your staff and hold your arm over the sea, and the water will split," said G-d.
