LIFETIME STORIES

As part of an interdisciplinary project carried out at Galileo Galilei High School, my 1st ESO Advanced English students have done their part by:

1. Asking well-thought-out questions to their grandmas and translating them into English.

2. Creating word clouds with relevant keywords from their interviews.

3. Presenting their grandmas to the class.

4. Creating an acrostic poem based on their grandmas' names.

5. Collaborating in this book.

We hope you like it. We made it with much love and dedication to honour these women who had more difficult lives.

Lucía Zamora Martín

My grandma is 82 years old. She lived in Toledo with her parents and her siblings until she decided to go to Madrid with her daughters and my grandpa. When she was young, she lived in a big old house. There wasn’t a doctor in the village but there was a young man who was learning.
She was fond of drawing, reading and writing. She went to school until she was eight years old and she liked it a lot. She told me that in her childhood she never travelled. In summer she did the same as the rest of the year. On a normal day she used to feed the chickens, sweep and also water the plants. Her best friend was Alicia and they got along very well. They used to play hide and seek.
She used to wear dresses that her sister made for her. We also talked a bit about climate change and she told me it rained and snowed much more than now.
Finally, I asked her to tell me something she remembered about her childhood and she told me something fun. When she was six years old, her neighbour had a very nice apron and, one day when she went to visit her, she took a pair of scissors and cut a small piece. And then she made dresses for her dolls!!!
I love my grandma and I am very thankful for having her in my life. The older I get, the more I realize how lucky I am to have a grandmother as wonderful as her. I am very proud of my grandmother. She is the best and one day I hope to be just like her.

Lucía Zamora Martín

Mi abuela tiene 82 años. Vivía en Toledo con sus padres y sus hermanos hasta que decidió irse a Madrid con sus hijas y mi abuelo. Cuando era joven, vivía en una casa grande y antigua. No había un médico en el pueblo, pero había un joven que estaba aprendiendo.
Le gustaba dibujar, leer y escribir. Fue a la escuela hasta los ocho años y le gustó mucho. Me dijo que en su infancia nunca viajó. En verano hacía lo mismo que el resto del año. En un día normal solía dar de comer a las gallinas, barrer y también regar las plantas. Su mejor amiga era Alicia y se llevaban muy bien. Solían jugar al escondite.
Solía usar los vestidos que su hermana le hacía. También hablamos un poco sobre el cambio climático y me dijo que antes llovía y nevaba mucho más que ahora.

Finalmente le pedí que me contara algo que recordara de su infancia y me contó algo bastante divertido. Cuando tenía seis años, su vecina tenía un delantal muy bonito y un día, cuando fue a visitarla, cogió unas tijeras y cortó un pequeño trozo. ¡¡¡Y luego hizo vestidos para sus muñecas!!!
Quiero mucho a mi abuela y estoy muy agradecida de tenerla en mi vida. Cuanto mayor me hago, más me doy cuenta de lo afortunada que soy de tener una abuela tan maravillosa como ella. Estoy muy orgullosa de ella, es la mejor y algún día espero llegar a ser como ella.

MY GRANDMOTHER

My grandmother’s name is Mercedes. She was born in Alcázar de San Juan, 6th December 1949. She is 72 years old. She was raised in a small house in San Blas- Canillejas with 3 siblings. She went to school for a very short period of time. She never had pets besides one dog, but she gave it to my uncles because she couldn’t take care of it.
She worked at a school for a while. She worked in the kitchen. In that school, she met my great aunt Carmen. One day my grandma went to Carmen’s house to give her her monthly salary. There she met my grandfather Jesús. She got married at the age of 24 in 1974 and she had 3 sons: my father and my two uncles.
My grandma loves travelling. She has been to Italy, China , Germany etc. One of the places she would like to visit is Vietnam. She used to dance flamenco as well.
Her favorite movies are “Schindler’s List “ and “ The Godfather”.She is also fond of music but she prefers listening to classical music rather than anything else. She actually hates music nowadays.
She is a wonderful person. I love her because she has always been there for me giving me all of her love.
