My Butterfly Bouquet

Each term we compete in an Inter Sports competition with the rest of our friends in Reception. We complete 3 challenges involving, throwing, striking and hitting. The class with the most points wins - Class 3 won!!!!

We used the musical instruments in our song 'Sunflower Seed'.

We have begun to read the wonderful story about nature called 'My Butterfly Bouquet'. We arrived to school to our very own 'glasshouse' of beautiful butterflies all around our classroom. The story shares different facts about butterflies and we worked in our keyworker groups to find out which predators eat butterflies.

We have been learning all about symmetry. We know that a butterfly is 'symmetrical' because it is the same on both sides. We have been exploring symmetry with paint to make a symmetrical butterfly.

We had an amazing time meeting new minibeast friends! Lyndsey shared lots of facts with us about each of the creatures and we were even able to hold them! As you can see from our photographs we had a great time!

We hope you have enjoyed reading all about the fantastic things we have been learning in Class 3. 

We looked at a range of books and sorted them into two groups which were fiction and non-fiction. We know that non-fiction books often use real life photographs and tell us information about lots of different things. Stories are what we call 'fiction' and are not real. They will have pictures in which have been drawn by an 'illustrator'.

We thoroughly enjoyed World Book Day when we came to school dressed as our favourite character from a story. The day began with a parade of our fantastic costumes with the rest of our Reception friends as well as Nursery. We then returned to class and shared our favourite story within our keyworker groups.

During RE lessons, we have been focusing on why we are special. It is really hard at times to think about the things we are good at but quite easy to think about our friends special qualities. We looked into a box with a mirror in and took a good look at ourselves and thought about all the things which we are good at and which make us special.

After reading the story of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' we explored which foods were healthy, unhealthy and a mixture of both. We then discussed which fillings we would use to make a healthy sandwich. Our suggestions included using brown bread, ham, cheese, tuna and salad! The following day we made our own healthy sandwiches learning to spread butter using a butter knife, chop cucumber, select our favourite fillings and then slice the sandwich in half.

We were delighted to share our fabulous Easter bonnets on our final day of term! We took part in a parade with our Reception friends and enjoyed sharing our wonderful creations.

We know lots of different occasions which we celebrate with our family and friends. We shared photos of special occasions we have experienced and spoke about why they were special.

We have begun to look at how we collect information and how it can be recorded in different ways. We had a selection of minibeasts and were then posed with the problem of how many do we have of each minibeast? We discussed how we could find this answer out and we knew to count them. We then looked at how we could arrange this information and began to use a simple table to represent it.

On Friday 18th March we joined in with 'Red Nose Day'. We dressed in red clothes and brought jokes in to share with our School Council.

We have been making shakers using pasta, rice and pots. We added sparkles and sequins then attached the pots together with cellotape. We then added lots of stickers to decorate our shakers! 

We know that butterflies love nectar and really love sunflowers so we decided to grow some! We read a book called 'Sunflowers' and discovered the difference between fiction and non-fiction texts. The book had instructions to plant a seed so we followed each one and planted our own seeds!

Miss Oldham organised a book swap in the hall. We were able to take time to look at lots of books and then pick two of our favourites.

We have been enjoying exploring our learning environment searching for mini beasts and signs of Spring! We used our prior learning to identify different mini beasts and talk about their characteristics.

Mini beasts live in lots of different places. Louie

You have to be gentle when you hold min beasts so that they don't get hurt. Charley

This term we have been focusing on our gymnastic skills. We have begun to develop our jumping technique and landing on one foot then two feet. we have used different equipment during the term also.

We have been learning all about Sukkot. We know it is a Jewish harvest celebration which lasts for 7 days. Jewish people build a Sukkah and spend lots of time in it over the 7 days. They pray in a synagogue.
