ESS2.C: The Roles of Water in Earth’s Surface Processes

ESS2-2 Describe and graph the amounts of salt water and fresh water in various reservoirs to provide evidence about the distribution of water on Earth.
Over 97 percent of the earth's water is found in the oceans as salt water.  Two percent of the earth's water is stored as fresh water in glaciers, ice caps, and snowy mountain ranges. That leaves only one percent of the earth's water available to us for our daily water supply needs.
Surface water includes the lakes, reservoirs, ponds, streams, canals, and freshwater wetlands. The definition of freshwater is water containing less than 1,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids, most often salt.
