Ottawa: Reflection on a Week

My favourite picture out of this trip was the picture I took at the Vimy monument. I think that it shows the architecture of Downtown Ottawa, and the pure beauty of the city. 

This picture is of Canadian officers, dirty from oil, loading shells in to a tank. This means a lot to me because it showed how tough the Canadian soldiers had to be to even do the littles jobs in the war.

This picture is important to me because of how all week we had to get up at seven thirty, were today we were able to sleep in.

These artifacts were examples of 1970s technology. On the right you have a mother board that was used in a secret Deifenbunker room, and on the left you have a disk that was used in the computers in the secret room. 

This picture is of the Vimy Ridge memorial in Ottawa, Ontario,  Canada. It was quite cold for it being sunny outside, really the first time we were met with that Ottawa shiver. The cervice was incredible, it was inspiring to see the changing of guards. Watch them created a sermon sense of nationalism.

Today we interviewed a veteran that had fought in many battles and missions closer to present day. He hade powerful insight on Vimy Ridge, and the fist world wars impact on Canada’s identity. Earlier in the day he gave a presentation on the wars he was in. At the end of his presentation he gave us a list of questions that anyone could ask him. The questions were quite provocative and interesting. This was the fist speaker that had served relatively resent. 

The Ottawa field study was the most anticipated field study’s this year. It not only was an amazing learning experience but also it fell on to perfect spot on the calendar. The Ottawa field study took place during the second week after spring break. I personally thought that other than it being a great learning environment, it was also a great way to make some new friends. Some of the aspects of Ottawa that I found inspiring were, the architecture, the east coast culture, parliament, and most importantly, it opened  my eyes to how big world really is, and that’s was just Canada. 

Canada’s role in the war was not instigated by choice but by the entering of the British, and coming out of the war vimmy ridge was there main accomplishment.

Canada as a nation was really glued together by the First World War. The battle of vimy ridge legitimized Canada as a nation and helped create the image of a true Canadian

Today I interviewed Grace, to get to better understand her views on Canada’s influence of WW1. I found that she had some of the same views that I had some of the similar views even though we live on other sides of Canada.

Here we have the PLP boys eating there first breakfast in he Terry Fox centre. Today was a slow day with little activities like going on walks every now and then. Otherwise the day was pretty uneventful, which was good since we only got three hours of sleep the night before.

I think as a Canadian it would have been hard for me to fight in the war.  Since I am from America and even though my view or Canadian politics is much like the rest of Vancouverites is still don’t feel fully Canadian. From being in Encounters With Canada (EWC) for only the short time I have stayed I have learned that if there isn’t a reason to fight than why fight. (Unless you are being controlled by Great Britain.

Here we have a World War Two Veteran explaining the importance of Vimy Ridge, and how it impacted Canada’s identity.

Here we have a gas mask that was used in World War One. Even though it wasn’t the first gas mask invented to aid the fight against chlorine gas, it is probably the most recognizable model to date. 

Pictures from the inside of the Deifenbunker

Parliament Buildings, structures in Ottawa, that house the Canadian Parliament (the Senate and the House of Commons). The buildings, which are designed in a Gothic Revival style, opened on June 6, 1866, a year before Canada’s Confederation. On February 3, 1916, a fire destroyed all but the Library of Parliament. Reconstruction began later that year and was completed in 1927.

Here we have a WW2 transportation Buggy. It was used to bring people to and from the DeifenBunker. The transport vehicle was stationed outside of blast tunnel. 

The Terry Fox Center was named after the Terrance Stanley Fox, and at the moment is occupied by Encounters With Canada, a government run association, to help Canadian students learn more about were they live.
