The air strike ended at 8:12 p.m. In just 14 minutes, 1300 tons of explosives from 368 planes fell on the city. Many citizens did not make it into the air raid shelter. The fire sucked in the oxygen and after a few minutes the people in the cellars could hardly breathe. People who left the air raid shelter died in the sea of flames up to 1600 degrees. Around 18 000 of the 60 000 citizens were killed. 98% of the Pforzheim center was destroyed.

My great-grandmother witnessed February 23rd. She was 31 old when Pforzheim was bombed. At that time she lived with her two children, Willi and Christa, in the northern part of the city. 

The Second World War lasted from 1939 to 1945. It began with the attack of the German Reich under Hitler´s leadership on Poland on September 1, 1939. By 1945, over 160 cities and 850 communities were attacked by Allied bombers. About 70 million people were killed.

The planes were sighted for the first time on February 23 at 7:45 p.m. Shortly after that at 7:48 p.m, the air raid alarm was triggered. People started running into the air shelters.

At around 7:45 p.m, British planes appeared on the northern edge of the Black Forest. The planes illuminated the airspace with light sources, through which they were also recognized. Then the planes dropped colorful target marks. These target marks created a golden ring around Pforzheim.
