لمحة تأريخيةتعود فكرة هذه اليوم الدولي إلى عام 1992، وهو العام الذي عُقد فيه مؤتمر الأمم المتحدة المعني بالبيئة والتنمية في العاصمة الأرجنتينية ريو دي جانيرو. وفي نفس العام، اعتمدت الجمعية العامة قرارها 47/193 الذي أعلنت فيه يوم 22 آذار/مارس من كل عام يوما عالميا للمياه.
واعتمدت في فترة لاحقة عددا من الفعاليات من مثل سنة الأمم المتحدة الدولية للتعاون في مجال المياه التي اُحتفل بها في عام 2013، فضلا عن العقد الدولي للعمل، ’’الماء من أجل التنمية المستدامة‘‘، 2018 - 2028. ويُراد من هاتين الفعاليتين وغيرهما التشديد على أن المياه ومعايير الصرف الصحي هي مداخل أساسي في عمليات خفض الفقر والنمو الاقتصادي والاستدامة البيئية.

Historical overviewThe idea of this international day dates back to 1992, the year in which the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development was held in the Argentine capital, Rio de Janeiro. In the same year, the General Assembly adopted its resolution 47/193, in which it declared March 22 of each year as World Water Day.
At a later period, it adopted a number of events, such as the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation, which was celebrated in 2013, as well as the International Decade for Action, “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018-2028.
