A divergent boundary is when two tectonic plates, in this case, the North American Plate and the Eurasian Plate, separate allowing magma from under the earth’s crust to rise and create magma chambers. Which is why there are over 130 active volcanoes in Iceland.&nbsp;

*Eruptions include: 920, 1612, 1821-1823 which lasted 14 months.&nbsp; *The last eruption was in April 15-21, 2010 which lasted 6 days! After being dormant (“sleeping”) form 190 years! *This eruption only emitted lava and had small earthquakes associated with it; and also created electrical (lightning) storms.&nbsp; *The “Mountain Glacier” is estimated to be the oldest volcano on the island at about 800,000 years old.&nbsp; *Although it is less know and less active than any of the other Iceland volcanoes.&nbsp;

Eyjafjallajokull is being fed by a large magma chamber under the mountain due to a divergent boundary of the the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.&nbsp;

*Its name is one that no one outside of Iceland seems to be able to pronounce.&nbsp; *Its name is made up of 3 parts: -Eyja (Aya) = island -Fjall (fiatal) = mountain -Jokull (yakatook) = glacier -Meaning “The Island’s Mountain Glacier”&nbsp; *It is completely covered by an ice cap
