Classroom Values
Hey All,
Welcome to ENGL 1102 or First Year Writing (although I know many of you aren't first year students). FYW is a class designed to teach fundemental principles of writing no matter the discipline. My teaching philosphy is based in three values:
Care -- In this class, I want you to feel like you can be your authentic self and that you feel safe to take risks with your writing and your learning. I believe that care comes in many forms including caring for our own physical, mental, and emotional well being as well as supporting all members of our classroom community.
Connection -- Writing is always a social act. I believe that part of learning to write is also learning to connect with others. In this class, we'll work to understand each other's goals and give feedback in support of those goals.
Creativity -- I find that the most meaningful projects are the ones where students feel free to express themselves and what matters to them in their writing. I encourage you to take creative risks with each project.
-Jensen

Drop in Hours: 9am to 11 am Mondays and Wednedays in Park Hall 10.5
Drop in Hours are times designed for me to help you outside of class. Please feel free to stop by at any point in the semester to talk about the class, an assignment, or life.
If the office door is closed, please knock loudly. I'm in the back of the room and may not know you are there otherwise.
If regular drop in hours don't work for your schedule, I'm also availible by appointment during the week. Send me an email and we'll find a time to talk!

Class Environment
I aim to create an environment where you feel safer to take risks, share your challenges and victories, and express your ideas throughout the writing and learning processes we will be using this semester.
When we are all in attendance and participating in the classroom, we are allies. The perceived risks of participating in and contributing to class will reward you and the classroom community.

Policies on Diversity and Inclusion
I am committed to facilitating an environment where students feel they belong and are valued. You are an important part of creating a welcoming, affirming environment, which means you should regard one another with respect and care, but also hold us accountable if you are experiencing discrimination, harassment, or other forms of exclusion. The policies and offices listed on the next page are important supports, but I am also willing to be an open ear if you have concerns or great ideas on how to make this course more inclusive and accessible.
Religious Observances - If religious observances interfere with class sessions, please discuss these concerns with me in order to plan ahead. I will continue to make every reasonable effort to help students avoid negative academic consequences when their religious obligations conflict with academic requirements.
