Climate change refers to the long-term changes in temperature and air temperature. These changes were initially due to natural factors. However, since the 19th century, human activities have gradually become the dominant factor, mainly because of burning fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. Due to the instability and imbalance of weather and temperature, humans, animals and ecosystems on Earth are threatened, as well as the overall sustainability and stability of the planet's future development (United Nations, n.d.).
Let me start by telling you a little bit about global warming. Global warming is caused by people burning fossil fuels, such as oil and coal, or cutting down forests and burning them to produce large amounts of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, which causes temperatures to rise, resulting in global warming (Shaftel, n.d.).
The difference between global warming and climate change is that global warming only refers to the increase in the temperature of the earth's surface, but climate change includes global warming, drought, and sea level rise. In other words, global warming is one of the climate changes (Kennedy & Lindsey, 2021).
Enhanced Greenhouse Effect
Definition: The process of global warming caused by the disruption of the Earth's climate equilibrium when the concentration of greenhouse gas emissions increases is called the enhanced greenhouse effect (Geoscience Australia & Department of Climate Change, 2018).
Connection between enhanced greenhouse effect and climate change: The enhanced greenhouse effect will increase the Earth's surface temperature and will have serious knock-on effects, such as widespread global rainfall, ocean circulation, increased frequency of extreme weather events, and rising sea levels. More importantly, in the long run, even a weak but persistent increase in temperature will have a significant impact on large areas of the environment, such as ice sheets or forest cover. That is, an enhanced greenhouse effect would increase the impact of climate change (Australian Academy of Science, 2017).
Definition: Like coal, oil, and natural gas are considered fossil fuels because they are made from fossilized remains of plants and animals buried millions of years ago (Denchak, 2018).
Link between fossil fuels and climate change: When fossil fuels are burned, they release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the air. This greenhouse gas causes global warming by trapping heat in the atmosphere. If global temperatures continue to rise, it could lead to further sea level rise, more frequent extreme weather events, and the destruction of biodiversity (ClientEarth Communications, 2022).
What are the most important things kids can reduce the impact of Climate Change?
Turn off the lights, walk or bike if you can, and take short showers (Mathez, n.d.).
Recycle, attend a conservation club at school to raise awareness, and ask your parents to replace incandescent with fluorescent lights (Mathez, n.d.).
