THE HISTORY OF CHAMPIGNY-SUR-MARNE, the city where we study

Champigny was the place of a famous battle in 1870 War. This battle lasted 3 days, from 30th November to 2nd December 1870 . This year, in 2020, we are celebrating the 150th anniversary of this battle, but because of the lockdown, the festivities planned by the city council are cancelled.

In the 19th century , the arrival of the railway increased the number of inhabitants. Champigny is gradually losing its countryside side to become a city.

1. In the Basque Country, the traditional costume is simple, but be careful, it is inseparable from the famous beret : white pants, white shirt, red jacket and of course the beret.

The Portuguese immigration in the 20th century massively increased the number or inhabitants rather quickly . Portuguese workers settled in Le Plateau district which will become famous under the name of "the slum".

In 1553 was created the Pigs Fair which is a very important event for the city and which stands each year, even if there has been no more pigs in Champigny for a long time.

René Descartes is one of famous France's national philosopher, whose Discours de la Méthode, defined thought as the essentiel human quality ("I think, therefore I am") and exemplified one of the classic characteristics of the French style of thinking : the deductive method of reasoning, which starts with a general, abstract proposition and then works. He was considered as the first modern philosopher. He is famous for having made an important connection between geometry and algebra, which allowed to solve some geometrical problems thanks to algebraic equations.

After almost 20 years, the council of Champigny razed the slum, and accommodated the Portuguese immigrants in good housing : that's why there is a monument in Le Plateau district : to remind us the strong link between Portugal and Champigny.

The History of Champigny dates back from Prehistory. We found traces of the first inhabitants in the Neolithic. At the beginning,there are only plantations : fruit trees,vineyards, cereal field and a forest. It was really the countryside. Today, it is a very urban city but since 2004, we have planted vineyards in order to produce some wine.
