Pierwszym ośrodkiem uprawy migdałowca był Bliski Wschód. Stąd jego uprawy były przez starożytnych Greków Rzymian i Egipcjan rozprzestrzeniane w regionie śródziemnomorskim: w Afryce Północnej i Europie Południowej. Zaczęto je tutaj uprawiać co najmniej 3 tysiące lat p.n.e.
