Going Coastal 2023

I am excited to see Yaquina Head because I love beaches and I am also very excited to see the cool rocks and light house. I am also very excited to go to the park and maybe see some baby seals but overall I am just excited for every part of this trip this is just one of the ones I am really excited about.

I am so very excited to see the wolves because well for one my last name is wulff and two I love wolves because they are so majestic and just so cool. I also really can’t wait to see the wolves of the sea aka Orcas! I love orcas they are so cool to me because they hunt just like wolves and they are so pretty with the black and white contrast. 

Wolf Haven is very important because it is a sanctuary that puts K9’s first. All of their wolves have been rescued from people who had them as pets or people who used them for show. If people have them as pets and they don’t want them anymore than they are normally put down or sent to a zoo because there are not a lot of places for them to go. Wolf Haven is a safe place for the wolves so that they don’t have to be put down and can live pretty much wild in a big enclosure with not a lot of people disturbing them. 

Depoe Bay is known as the smallest navigatable harbor. On March 11, 2011, the port was damaged by a tsunami caused by an earthquake off the coast of Japan.

This was my favourite part of a meal today! 

I did not have anything new at dinner however it was my first time at Dairy Queen which is what we had for lunch. Overall I give it a 6/10!

The reason that the farmers started to settle and raise cows in Tillamook is because of the landscape and climate. The fields and the wet climate made a perfect place for cows and happy healthy cows make delicious cheese and yogurt and other dairy. 

Being citizen scientist means going out into the field and collecting data for scientists. Examples of this is the shrimping and seeing how big they are and how many are pregnant etc. Other examples is going out to do sturgeon fishing because you need a guide and you release them but the guide measures it and reports the data. It is important to have citizen scientists because there are a lot of plants and animals and only so many scientists so if we can get the public to help with data not only is it fun but it is very helpful for collecting mass data. It is also a great opportunity to spread the word or educate citizens on endangered animals and plants.

This is my favourite clip because it is a number of short videos from our trip so far. I used Clips to combine these videos and I am so excited for the other quests to come. I  used mostly clips from our driving.

This is the most inter thing I saw at Cabelas.

The Astoria Column is 125 feet tall and is covered on the outside by a freize that depicts a story about the new settlers.

Our group worked together by creating a system and trying to listen to each other. The system worked like this one person had the paper and would read out the clues and then we would figure the clue out and then go as fast as we could to the place it led us too. Once we got to the quest box one person would grab it and then another person would stamp while someone wrote our names and time in the book. Then The person who took the box out put it back and then we run as fast as we can to the end. Something that didn’t work as well was that we kept second guessing ourselves which slowed us down cause even if we were in right place we wold take a minute second guessing it which wasted time. Next time I think me and my group have decided we should try and stop second guessing ourselves so that we don’t waste as much time. Also to ignore other groups because sometimes they would stop to talk to us so I think we could also save time by just ignoring them.

When the colonists came to Oregon they met the Chinook People. They started a fur trade with them and started to take away and demolish their culture. In the signs you also read all about how red cedar was really important to them which is something that the colonists took away as well. Just like Canada they started to take land and yield business on it. Their world view was definitely impacted because ever since these random people who had their own way on life show up their original culture and land was being taken away from them. Some facts I learned that they were part of a intertribal trade network along the river and coast long before the Europeans came. I also learned that they used Nettle for medical purposes and also as a fibre spun into twine.

Cannon Beach is most well known for haystack rock which is the rock in my photo. It is sometimes called the 3rd largest intertidal rock in the world.

The challenges that we faced during the ROV was that the buoyancy was off because we had too many floats. We also had problems with finding where we should put the motor that pushes it up. We fixed the problems by talking to each other and then trial and error. For the buoyancy problem we added less floats to the side that didn’t have motors so that it would still be even but be just below the water. The other problem was that the motor that makes the ROV go up kept flipping so we had to find a more secure spot to put it. What we did was place a bar in the middle so it would still go up and down but not flip. In the end it performed very well and I got to drive it around which was really fun. Next time I would find a better place to put the middle motor that made more sense.

Hatfield Marine Science Center R.O.V. Challenge

Fort Stevens is a state park that is home to many batteries. A batterie is a hidden base that had a giant gun that is shaped like a cannon. The reason they are called batteries is not because they hold storage but rather because they were used batter like a bettering ram because they would fire multiple shots at any threat. In the end all of the batteries were a failure because they were never needed, the only exception was a Japanese submarine that fired 17 shots and missed all of them and the captains decided not to attack because that would give away their secret forts. We also got to go inside one of the batteries and it was super dark and creepy but also very fun and interesting. This battery had the biggest gun of them all which was 30ft long. In the photos you can see that the circle is where the guns were held. There were also renactors who had so many artifacts. I learned all about how the Americans really focused on moral which you could see because they would give the soldiers these meal boxes with gum and coke and a little stove and even made sure they had hot meals. Overall this was one of my favourite places on the trip I even got a sweater that I have worn every day after. 

There is a tsunami machine because The Oregon coast has a risk of tsunamis. When you go to Oregon especially when you are near the beaches you will see a lot of tsunami evacuation route signs. They have this machine to explain to kids and people how the tsunamis work and how the barriers help. The tsunami machine has a spot where you have to try to build a barrier to protect the lego person which represents you.

The reason that you can’t take the rocks is because they are a none renewable source. A none renewable source is when you can not replace it. The rocks are non renewable because they have been carved and crushed by waves. There is actually a fine for if you take the rocks so do not take any rocks of you go!

For the crab racing we focused on what makes a crab faster. You and your group chose from different variables and then conducted an expirement to find out the answer to your hypothesis. My group used the variable of gender and our hypothesis was that the females were faster. We had a hula hoop and i would take a crab and put it in the centre of the hula hoop and we would start the timer once i let go of it. We would then stop the timer once the crab reached the edge if the hula hoop. Our conclusion was that the males were faster however what we found interesting was that the other groups that had done the same variable as us said the females were faster than the males. Maybe our feamles that we had were slower or mabye we were using different methods for example of they did the runway at a slant versus us doing the hula hoop.

I would cross the bar If a professional Pilot or skipper was driving me. I think it would be very fun and adventurous! I would also cross the bar where it is less crazy and a little more calm so that it would still be a roller coaster ride but just not as deadly!

Small businesses are important to small towns because a lot of people like to support small businesses which bring in money for the town. Small businesses are mostly run by people who love in the town and in a small town everybody know everybody so that can make it easier for people to get a job. 

A fact that I learned on the boat is that the whales sometimes don’t eat for three to five months when they are migrating to calving areas.
