Inquiry D002 2018

This multi-touch book is a compilation of the inquiry research that Grade 8 students at Westsyde Secondary School in Kamloops, B.C. did. Students in Grade 8 are “learning to learn.” They have been learning high school research skills and how to present their learning in an electronic book form.

Adolf Hitler

Born: April 20 1889

Died: April 30 1945

Death: Suicide by gunshot

Who? Adolf Hitler was a German politician, demagogue, Pan-Germ revolutionary, and the leader of the Nazi party. He rose to power as chancellor in 1913 and then became the Fuher in 1934. He ordered the Germans to round up the Jews to kill them because he blamed them for losing in world war 1 and they didn’t follow his idea of perfect people.

Josef Stalin

Born: December 18, 1878 Gori, Georgia

Died: March 5, 1953 Moscow, Russia

Death: Cerebral hemorrhage

Who? Losif Vissarionovich Dzhugashvill was the dictator leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or the USSR from 1929 to 1953. He held the titles of General Secretary of the communist party of the Soviet Union from 1922 to 1952 and the premier from 1941 to 1953

Quotes: A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic.
Death is a solution to all problems, no man- no problem

Benito Mussolini

Born: July 29, 1883

Died: April 28, 1945

Death: execution by firing squad

Who? He was an Italian politician who was also the leader of the national fascist party. He ruled Italy from 1922 to 1943, he ruled constitutionaly until 1925 when he established a dictatorship. He was executed by Italian partisans in the village of Giulino di Mezzigra.

Quotes: Democracy is beautiful in theory; in practice it is a fallacy. You in America will see that one day.
War is to men what maternity is to woman. From a philosophical and doctoral view point, I do not believe in perpetual peace.

Harry S. Truman

Born: May 8, 1884 Lamar, Missouri, USA

Died: December 26, 1972, Kansas, Missouri, USA

Death:Cardiovascular Disease

Who? Harry S. Truman was the 33rd president of the United States, taking office after Franklin Rosevelt died suddenly. Harry was a world war 1 veteran. Truman was the president who authorized the Nukes to be dropped on Japan. He was also the president during the end of world war 2 and the beginning of the Cold War.

Quotes: I never did give anybody hell.
Actions are the seed of fate, deeds grow into destiny.
If you can’t convince them, confuse them.

Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill’s speech

Born: November 30, 1874, Blenheim Place Oxfordshire, England

Died: January 24, 1965, London

Death: Stroke

Who? He was a British writer, military leader, and statesman. He was the Prime Minister of England and created alliances with the Soviet Union and the United States to defeat the Nazis. During the invasion of Normandy, they had to stop him from joining in the battle.

Quotes: If you’re going through hell keep going.
Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.
Success is not final, failure is not fatal, it is the courage to carry on that counts.

Hirohito

Born: April 29, 1901 Tokyo Japan

Died:January 7, 1989

Death: Intestinal Cancer

Who? Hirohito was the 124th emperor of Japan according to the traditional order of succession reigning from Dec 25, 1926 to January 1989 when he died.

All men are brothers, like the seas throughout the world; so why do winds and waves clash so fiercely everywhere?

Franklin D. Roosevelt

Born: January 30, 1882

Died: April 12, 1945

Death: Caught Polio in 1921 and it killed him.

Who? Franklin Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States of America and was in office during the Great Depression and part of World War II. He was the only president to be elected for four terms. He was also a “C” student at Harvard.

Happiness lies not in the mere possession of money, it lies in the joy of achievement and the thrill of creative effort.

Charles de Gaulle

Born: November 22, 1890 Lille, France

Died: November 9, 1970 Colombey-les-dues-Edlisese

Death: Heart attack

Who ? Charles Andre de Gaulle was a french general and statesman who led the French Resistance against Nazi Germany during World War II and chaired the Provisional Government of the French Republic from 1944 to 1946 in order to re-establish democracy.
