This multi-touch book is a compilation of the inquiry research that Grade 8 students at Westsyde Secondary School in Kamloops, B.C. did. Students in Grade 8 are “learning to learn.” They have been learning high school research skills and how to present their learning in an electronic book form.
Below in the table of contents you will see the students Inquiry questions and their chapters they wrote. We hope you enjoy reading and listening (some parts are multi-media content) to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

What is judo?
Judo is a martial art based on jujitsu the traditional unarmed fighting style of the Japanese warriors or samurai. The difference between judo and jujitsu is when Jigoro Kano created judo he removed the more dangerous techniques that jujitsu has such as punching and kicking. Judo is performed on mats called tatami. Also when you are performing judo you must be in the uniform called a gi which is traditionally made from heavy white cotton.
Who Created Judo
Jigoro Kano is the creator of judo. He was born December 10, 1860 and past away on May 4, 1938. Jigoro Kano was only 22 years old when he created judo. He attained a doctorate degree in judo, a degree in equivalent to the 12 Dan awarded to the originator of judo only.
When Was Judo Created
In 1882 Jigoro Kano created judo for men, until it was made a demonstration sport for women in 1988. Then judo became an Olympic sport for men in 1964 but it did not become an Olympic sport for women until 1992.
Why Was Judo Created
Judo was created by the Japanese like most martial arts because the Japanese were smaller then most of the foreign visitors. So the size differences made it very hard for the Japanese people to fight back. So the Japanese invited it martial arts to give them a fighting chance with a larger foreigner if there was ever a time when a foreigner challenged them or they changed a foreigner
How Is Judo Scored
In judo the scoring is very strict. An Ippon is a full point which is only awarded if a controlled throw happens, some one taps out from an arm bar or choke, or the competitor holds down there opponent for 20 seconds any of those would win a match and end it. A waza-ari means a half point which is awarded if a not that controlled of a throw happiness, or if one of the competitors is held down for 15 seconds. If you were to earn two waza-ari’s you would be be awarded a full point which would win the match and end it. If the person judging your match were to say Osaekomi that would mean that a hold-down is being applied. The last two I will tell you about are Hajime which means start and Matte means stop.
