This multi-touch book is a compilation of the inquiry research that Grade 8 students at Westsyde Secondary School in Kamloops, B.C. did. Students in Grade 8 are “learning to learn.” They have been learning high school research skills and how to present their learning in an electronic book form.

Introduction

Where Did Soccer Originate?

Soccer or football has dated back many centuries ago, and has been played by many countries making the exact origins unknown. It may have developed in other countries and although the exact location is not known, there is a form of soccer that was played in China a long time before Caesar, a Roman dictator, brought the game of harpastum to Britain. Harpastum was a game played by Romans. Many countries have claimed soccer as their original idea but England had been credited transitioned soccer because they had the first recorded uniformed rules.

As recently as 2011 a new find has changed soccer's history forever. A book was uncovered with the name Vocabula. It was written by a citizen of Aberdeen in Scotland. The book was about a game where two teams playing with a ball on the field, and terms like goalkeeper, kick off, and switch halves were mentioned. This book was written in the fourteenth century and it dated back over four hundred years before the English FA was created. A ball was also found in Scotland from the fifteenth century, and is the oldest soccer ball in the world. It has been unclear as to who started the game of soccer, but as of right now Scotland has claimed the title. Maybe in the future a new discovery will be made.

How Have The Rules Changed Throughout The Years?

In 1848 the first rules of the game were introduced and later in 1872 the ball size was changed. In 1874 a piece of equipment called a shin guard was brought by a man named Sam Weller Widdowson. Crossbars replaced tape in 1875 as an ‘advanced’ piece of equipment. Referees started using whistles in 1878 so he was better heard. In 1891 nets were used and in the same year penalties were in play. The wage rule for players was formalized in 1901. In 1906, the laws of the game were rewritten for the first time. In 1924 after much discussion, the rules were changed, stating that a goal can be scored through a corner kick (a kick at the corner of the opposing team's side after the ball went out of the play by the net). In 1925 the offside rules were changed, it was decided that in order to stay onside you only need two not three defencemen between the player and the ball. In the year 1929, the rules changed so it stated that the goalie must stay on the goal line until the penalty is kicked. Also, in 1951 the ball was changed to the colour white. Much has changed since the beginning of soccer, and things will continue to change as the game grows and progresses.

What Gear and Clothing Do Players Use and How Is It Useful?

Soccer players don’t use a lot of equipment but what they do wear is there for safety and protection. Players wear a jersey that matches everyone on their team so the teams can be easier to tell apart and the jersey usually represents the academy, program, city, or country. They also wear shorts that go down around your thighs and are loose because if it was below the knee or high and tight it would be uncomfortable to move in. Everyone on each team wears matching socks high enough to cover and hold the shin guards in place but not so high that they are above the knee. Goalies also wear gloves to help pick up the ball and protect their hands.
