Welcome
to the 6th_teen mag
13
Dear readers,
after a lot of effort and not a lot of time, we are happy to present you the first issue of the 6th_teen mag! It's the work of the 3rd grade students of our school (beginners' classes), who put in a lot of love along with search and imagination on various topics that we hope you will find interesting!
We would like to thank the 1st Junior High School of El. Venizelos for the idea they gave us to make our own magazine in an e-version, as well as everyone who supported and helped us in any way to carry out this new and quite difficult project...
We wish you all a good read and a happy, care-free and most of all covid-free summer!!!

… A romantic name for a romantic neighborhood! One of the most
beautiful old neighborhoods built outside the old city walls extends
from Agios Panteleimon up to the district of Bolari and it includes
the area of the Old Hospital. The first buildings belong
to the late Ottoman Empire and were owned by well-to-do Muslims. It was
named after a kind of tree called Akakia (Acacia farnesiana or Vachelia
farnesiana), also known as gazia (sweet acacia) that once existed in the area
in abundance and in the Turkish dialect is called Amperia or Amperi.
Gazia is a deciduous, thorny tree of medium growth, with a final height of 4m.
It blooms from Spring to Autumn, with special, round-shaped flowers, yellow in
color and very fragrant. Resistant to calcareous soils, air pollution
and salinity, it prefers areas with mild climate. It makes an ideal choice for
individual planting and for creating tree lines.
Some elderly citizens say that they still keep the image and fragrance of those
trees on their mind although today there are very few left, here and there…
Gradually , in the course of time, the remaining Amperies were replaced
by our municipality with other kinds of tree, with which many residents
of the area are not excited since in the summer they give off a sticky
liquid that causes damage to cars and makes it difficult for someone
to walk on the pavement...
Nowadays, there is an urgent need for immediate tree planting in parts
and streets of the district that are unacceptably dry and completely
deprived of green (eg. Tsondou Vearda street, Kapodistriou, Vamou and
the area of Agios
Panteleimon also, which could well turn into an aromatic oasis…) And
since one
might claim that this kind of tree is deciduous as wells as quite too
expensive for the municipality to afford, there is still the option of
residents buying just one amberia at their own expense and plant it in
their front yard,
for the benefit of the environment and the beauty of our city! So as our
neighborhood to be identified again with its floral name!!!
