Head of School Welcome

This has been a short half term, yet we have still managed to enjoy lots of learning and celebratory events. School trips to Tintagel, Charlestown and Falmouth plus a theatre visit have provided super enrichment to our curriculum. Career events and workshops across classes are underway, from Nursery to Year 6, and we look forward to developing this further. Finishing the half term with DT Days, this time with a focus on cooking, has had the whole school smelling delicious - and everyone feeling hungry!

We are continuing to work with Go Cornish - still aiming to attain the Bronze Award this term. As part of this, it was wonderful to hear our super excited and enthusiastic Reception pupils perform to the whole school the song they wrote, sharing their thoughts and ideas about living in St. Austell - star performers!

A highlight of this half term is definitely the whole school shared celebration we held outside for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. With our KS2 pupils sharing time, food, music and conversation with our younger children alongside the whole staff team, it's been wonderful see the children enjoy larger shared events together and we look forward to more of these occasions again next half term. Finally, I want to thank you for your continued support and hope everyone enjoys the holiday, including of course the Queen's Platinum Jubilee Bank Holiday celebrations ahead.

Nursery - Acorn Class

This has been a wonderful half term of learning in Nursery! We started off this half term by sharing our brilliant learning with our parents and carers. This was a wonderful opportunity for us to share our Learning Journeys and our creative work together!

We have started to learn about different letter sounds in our Phonics learning in preparation for some of our Nursery children starting School. The children have been doing a fantastic job at recognising the sounds 's' 'a' 't' 'p' 'i' 'n'. We have also begun to practise our letter formation using large scale mark making resources such as chalks outside!

The Nursery children have been super busy helping to create our new 'Dinosaur Adventure Area' outdoors! We did this by choosing and planting different plants into tyres! We discussed how we need to look after the plants and what plants need to help them grow. The children did a brilliant job and it has been wonderful to see our new Dinosaur area in action!

We have really enjoyed learning about amazing animals around the world! We have been looking at maps of the world and discussing where different animals live. The children were eager to make their own animal masks to take part in their own role play!

Well done Nursery! You have had another brilliant half term full of lots of busy learning!

Reception - Apple and Cherry Classes

Reception enjoyed their recent trip to Charlestown for our first ever school trip! Leading up to our trip, we have been talking about the importance of being a good pedestrian, and discussing how we can stay safe on our journey. The children were fantastic pedestrians: they all stayed on the pavement, held hands with their partner, and were sensitive to other pavement users. The children made sure that they walked sensibly, and looked both ways before crossing the road. The adults were so impressed!

Leading up to the trip we have been talking about special buildings including churches and the special features within. It was brought to life during our visit to the church. The children sat quietly in the pews, waiting to hear from Julia, who kindly offered to tell us all about the church. The children were then able to explore the church in small groups. The children explored thoughtfully, being careful not to touch any of the special religious artefacts. The children were able to comment on what they saw, noticing different features of the church such as the stained glass windows, the pews, the Bible stand and the organ. Some of the children talked about how they had been in churches before, for weddings and other events; we were able to spot the doors that the bride would come in through to get married! The children all considered why the building is so special to members of the community, and listened carefully to Julia as she explained its importance. At school our art has focused on natural and transient art. We have found out about the work of British artist Andy Goldsworthy and enjoyed having a go at making some of our own natural art when we were on the beach. The children had the opportunity to explore the natural objects around them, such as pebbles, seaweed and bigger rocks, in order to create some transient art, inspired by our focus artist Andy Goldsworthy. The children freely explored the resources and used their imaginations to create faces, patterns and designs. In the final activity, we looked at pictures of rock sculptures and had a go at making our own. The children selected different sized rocks and found that certain rocks were easier to stack than others! They made comparisons between the rocks, noticing shapes, colours and sizes.
