Why is English a global language?
What is a global language?
A language reaches a global status when it develops a special role that is recognized in every country. This role will be most evident in
countries where large numbers of the people speak the language as a mother tongue but this mother-tongue use by itself cannot give a language global status. To achieve such a status, a language has to be taken up by other countries around the world. They must decide to give it a special place within their communities.
There are two main ways in which this can be done:
1
 A language can be made the official language of a country, to be used
as a medium of communication. To get on in these societies, it is essential to master this official language.
A language can be made a priority in a country’s foreign-language teaching, even thought his language has no official status. It becomes the language which people are most likely to be taught during their education.

2
So, why is English a global language?
English is considered a global language since it is a language spoken by the most powerful countries around the world.
David Crystal claimed that when one country takes up English as a second language it immediately starts to make it their own. This is clearly seen in their vocabulary. If you didn't know their cultural background, it would be difficult for a foreigner to understand what certain words mean. These new varieties of english which are culturally influenced are found in every part of the world and are part of the "future Englis-es".

New Englishes
This term is a variety of English language used in places where it is not the mother tongue. So it is learnt as a second language or as one language within a multilingual context. It is not considered as a new language since it is an adaptation used mainly for communication.

It has developed in an area where a native variety of english wasn’t spoken by a majority of the population;

Its main purpose is for communication;

It has become nativised, that is to say, it has developed its own grammar and vocabulary.

WHY?
mainly to name new objects that appear in a culture.
Can they be considered counter hegemonic?
It is said that New Englishes has a close connection with a history of hegemony and simultaneously referring to the economically, politically and culturally differentiated identities within global capitalism. Because of the hegemonic position of English, particularly in the 20th century, the different terms used to refer to Englishes (as a lingua franca or as a global language) are strongly connected to its cultural politics. The cultural meanings of these terms prevent us from viewing them as ideologically innocent concepts, while English as a global, an international, or a world language is a direct link to notions and practices of cultural homogenization and the elimination of cultural identities. These new Englishes are associated with English as an international language (EIL) and English as a lingua franca (ELF) which will be mentioned later.
