My only concern is that teachers who most need to learn the strategies in this book may not decide to read it due to the title. If they do read the book, they may think, "This is not my teaching style; I could never teach like that!" I have had the experience where teachers have told me, "I would not dress up as the Right Brain during your observation. Are you crazy?" (Well, the students were engaged, and my evaluator loved it.) I support Dave Burgess' call to action! I hope one day I can meet him at a conference. Meanwhile, I will share the fantastic strategies I learned from reading this book when I present at conferences, present workshops, teach my KSU course, and co-teaching at my high school.

I selected the song Pure Imagination because Part Two of Teach Like a Pirate focuses on the HOW of creating engaging lessons. Dave Burgess says, "The power of a lesson cannot be maximized without the incorporation of a masterful presentation where students are drawn into the content as if by some magical force." There is a moment during a highly engaging lesson when all of a sudden, students realize, "Hey, he's teaching us!" Teachers have learned many techniques and methods to teach content, but often one element is missing, The Presentation. So how do we create lessons that result in magical moments? We must take time to think about the lesson and use our imagination!

Dave Burgess strongly believes in the power of collaboration. He states that wonderfully creative, innovative, and practical results can come out of collaboration. He quotes Napoleon Hill, author of the book, Think and Grow Rich. When a group of individual brains are coordinated and function in the spirit of Harmony, the increased energy created through that alliance becomes available to every brain in the group."

Teach Like a Pirate was a perfect book for me to review because it supports my belief that Creativity does not have to be sacrificed to meet content standards. I always seek new strategies to engage my students and connect them with real-world applications. I agree with Dave Burgess that we can "drill and kill our student's love of learning," or we engage our students both affectively and cognitively. Dave Burgess shares current brain research that supports his teaching methods. One section of the book that I found interesting focused on a neurological system called the Reticular Activating System, RAS, where the brain attends to stimuli important to you and filters out everything else. This occurrence always seems amazing to me. No sooner do I start to write a unit on the Metaverse, then all of a sudden, it is in the news, I discover an article or friends are talking about a subject that I had never thought of before. There are many connections to what we have learned in our Creativity and Change Leadership courses. Within the chapters, I found the value of Incubation, teachers can learn to be creative, the importance of creating a vision, and stating challenges as questions so that our minds can connect to help us develop creative ideas. His teaching methods also support the Torrance Incubation Model, especially in Step 1, Heighten Anticipation – getting the student's attention, igniting curiosity, and inspiring motivation to learn. RAS: YOUR RETICULAR ACTIVATING SYSTEM: RAS is a neurological system. The brain learns to attend to stimuli that it believes are important to you. No sooner do you get involved in a new subject than out of nowhere, you see an article, news report, or overhear a conversation about it!

THE REAL LAW OF ATTRACTION: Flashes of inspiration only come when you have "tuned" your mind to the correct frequency by engaging in the creative process and asking the right questions.

THE IDEA CAPTURING SYSTEM: Your subconscious mind continues to work on your goals. (Incubation) Ideas may come at unusual times. Create a system for capturing the ideas so that you do not forget them.

Many teachers are set in their ways related to their teaching methods and creating an empowering classroom environment. They might fear stepping out of their comfort zone to create what Dave Burgess calls "A Learning Extravaganza." These teachers will need encouragement from co-workers and the support of their administrators to take this leap. The lyrics and theme of the song Everything's Coming Up Roses can be a positive affirmation to a teacher who fears trying something new.
