What does an annotated bibliography look like, anyway?

Hey! Times New Roman. I wonder if that's supposed to be 12 point font, like an MLA citation?

Yes, my dear, brilliant student. You are correct! An annotated bibliography is formatted in Times New Roman 12 point font. However...it's NOT double spaced.

You have got to be kidding me. How can I remember all of this??

Here's what to remember about research: It's like collecting puzzle pieces. You are never going to find the perfect source that will provide all of the information you need.

What you have to remember (sorry, my dears) is that you are not the expert.

You MIGHT find out that your idea won't work.

That's okay! Research is finding out why something works or doesn't work.

This process is a lot like a chemistry project - you have a hypothesis that you are attempting to prove or disprove.

You need three sources for your Annotated Bibliography. You may use two from Actively Learn, but the third must be from the library database. We've had a lot of practice with this, but review your notes if necessary.

SUGGESTED COMPLETION DATE: Monday, May 18

▢ Format: 12 point, Times New Roman font, 1” margins, title, double-spaced ▢ MLA header ▢ CITATIONS are MLA formatted ▢ Sentences, sentences, sentences! All should be correct. ▢ Sentences vary: long/short, simple/compound, etc. ▢ Writer shows proficiency: Correctly combines independent clauses. ▢ Eliminate all run on sentences. ▢ Eliminate all comma splices (using a comma where you should use a period, a comma-conjunction, or a semi-colon). ▢ Correct spelling errors; get a proofreader to help catch them. ▢ Capitalization is used intentionally; no missing/extra caps. ▢ Apostrophes are used for contractions and to show possession ▢ Punctuation is used to make writer’s meaning clear. ▢ Check and fix: their vs. there vs. they’re ▢ Check and fix: your vs you’re ▢ Check and fix: it’s (always means it is) vs. its ▢ Check and fix: than vs then (than compares; then is time) ▢ Word choice is strong, adds interest; vocabulary is varied ▢ All sources are cited; if the words/ideas are not from your own brain, you must give credit. ▢ direct quotes and facts are credited in the text of the essay. Ex. As Dr. Jelinek, Dakota Ridge Principal, stated, “...”

Take 5 minutes to reflect on what you've found in your research. Do the experts you've read seem to agree that your model for school in the fall will work? How do you know? What SPECIFIC quote or piece of data helps you know it?

How do the data, statistics, or credible anecdotes relate to your idea? Do you want to change your thoughts or your approach? Do you need additional information?

Fortunately, you don't need to remember all of the rules of MLA formatting. You do have to know where you can find them. Remember, Ms. Bender is all about you knowing how to use your resources and problem-solve on your own.

Whew. Okay. So....where can I find a resource to help create an annotated bibliography?

Not so fast, crazy head! We have to learn about each part, first.

CITATION

Oh, no. Nope. We have done this a lot. If you need a refresher on how to create a citation, you need to check in with your classmates. (Hint: Using EasyBib is okay.) (Hint 2: MLA format.) (Hint 3: The citations are already given on the library database entries.)

Revising a paper (or infographic) is about making sure your ideas are clear. I highly recommend that you have another person look at your infographic, and afterward, ask them these questions:

--Is this infographic easy to read? --What am I trying to persuade you is the right thing for school in the fall? --Did I provide any evidence? What was it? --Did I convince you that my idea is the right one? (What evidence supports my claim?) --Did I debunk any other possible answers?

On the next few pages you will find examples of entries for Annotated Bibliographies. Compare your first entry to these and fix any mistakes.

Take time to write, doodle, record your thoughts about the project so far. What kinds of things do you want to propose for school in the fall (keeping in mind that you can't just go with "let's go back to exactly how things were.")

If you have to use more than 3 sources for research, then that's what you have to do.

In your Writer's Notebook or a Google doc, take apart the project prompt. Write* for at least 5 minutes on each section.

What sticks out in my mind from the Actively Learn articles we have read about COVID-19?

What do I want school to look like in the fall?

What supporting evidence do I need to show that my plan is workable?

Does any of that help me think about what school should look like? How?

Based on my own experience, what do I think have been the benefits of remote learning?

What information do I need to know? Who are the experts in this subject? Why are they the experts? What facts, figures, data and/or statistics do I need to support my idea?

Based on my own experience, what do I think have been the drawbacks of remote learning?

EVALUATION: CREDIBILITY

It might be easy to say, "Oh, this author is a PhD, so the article is credible," but what if that person is writing about molecular biology and you find out his PhD is in Medieval Art? You MUST go deeper and figure out why the author should be considered an expert. 

EVALUATION: USEFULNESS

How does this source help you answer your research question or support your claim? What will this resource provide you: background information, statistical data, etc? Does this resource support your point of view or provide information about the other side of the issue? Will this source be useful or not in your final project?

For your final project in English 10, you will be creating a research-based infographic with annotated bibliography to propose a workable model for school in the fall of 2020.

SUMMARY

The first part to an entry for a annotated bibliography is a basic summary of the article that includes the author's claim and main pieces of support.

EXPLANATION OF TYPE

An explanation of what type of resource it is: journal entry, book, article, etc. and whether it is a primary or secondary source.

It sounds like we're writing paragraphs for each entry. Do we have to use complete sentences and proper grammar?
