India was the first country to mine diamonds? From the 4th century BC for around 1,000 years, India was the only source of diamonds in the world. The original diamonds were found in the Krishna River Delta. In the 18th century, more diamond deposits were discovered in Brazil, and soon after, in South Africa, adding to the market of diamonds.

The Romans and Greeks used to believe that the diamonds were the tears cried by the gods or the splinters from the falling stars. A diamond can only be scratched by another diamond and they are the hardest natural substance ever known. Diamonds are nearly 100% carbon and are made up of a single element.

Billions of years ago, Earth used to be extremely hot, creating perfect conditions for diamonds to form. Diamonds form about 100 miles beneath the surface of the earth and are carried to the surface by volcanic eruptions. Diamonds can have inclusions, which look like dark spots inside the diamond.
