Introduction
Art is an experience in the form of an attractive and neatly arranged sensory medium, which is manifested to be communicated and contemplated. Art is a human work that can cause pleasure in our spirit.
According to Herbert Read, "art is an attempt to create pleasant forms. Such forms satisfy our awareness of beauty and this sense of beauty is fulfilled when we find unity or harmony from the relationship of the forms we observe.
Dance is one form of art that has a medium of expression or substance of motion, and the motion that is revealed is human motion. The movements in dance are not realistic movements or everyday movements, but movements that have been given an expressive form.
Traditional Dance
Dance is a type of performing art consisting of movements that are in harmony with the accompanying music. Dance that is born and grows in a society which is then passed down or passed down continuously from generation to generation is the definition of traditional dance. Traditional dance is a dance that is the embodiment of culture in an area.
Traditional dance is a means of mass communication. At traditional dance events, the public will gather and watch so that they can exchange various kinds of information while watching. Movements and traditional dance music also often contain messages in the form of life teachings or religious da'wah.
The message is easier to digest and remember if it is conveyed through traditional dance. Traditional dance functions as a traditional ritual ceremony that has been carried out from generation to generation in a culture.
The uniqueness of traditional dance includes movements, musical accompaniment, clothing, and makeup that are different and reflect the culture of each region.
Saman dance
Saman dance is one of the traditional dances from Indonesia which is well known throughout foreign countries. This dance is a Gayo highland tribal dance in the XIV century AD which is usually performed when celebrating important events in adat. Therefore, the poetry contained in one of the 34 traditional dances from Indonesia uses the Gayo language. In some literature it is stated that the Saman Dance was developed by Syekh Saman who is a cleric from Gayo in Southeast Aceh.
Anyone who enjoys this traditional dance from Aceh, will surely be amazed by the cohesiveness of the dancers who can be considered extraordinary. Saman dance is performed in a sitting, neat, and lined manner that is not the same as other dances which usually perform free movement. The clapping movements and the distinctive tempo of the rhymes are very special because everything can run in synchrony. The Saman Dance movement cannot be done by just one person, so the dancers who combine this movement of patting the shoulders and hands must do it in groups.
On November 24, 2011, the Saman Dance was designated by UNESCO as the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity at the 6th session of the Inter-Governmental Committee for the Protection of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage in Bali.
