How to face optimism is the face of difficultyLoading...
By Julie Meyer

Although a positive outlook on life is important, studies suggest that the most important predictor of positive outcomes among children who face trying circumstances is a long-term relationship with a caring adult. To begin building resilience in your child, demonstrate the conviction that life is worthwhile and recognize and reinforce the qualities that enhance resilience.

Persistence in the face of failure!

A Respectful Manner!
"A positive outlook on life is a hallmark of resilient individuals. It is not what happens to us but our response to it that predicts our emotional health. Children can learn to be more resilient by becoming more optimistic in response to difficulty."

How to Foster Optimism in Students:
Resilience takes practice. Like a muscle, you must exercise it to become stronger. It is also a belief that while you can't control everything in your life, there are many things you can control, especially your attitude.
Set Brave Goals:
Work with students to sift through their school and personal goals - but ensure they are SMART goals. Things like 'getting all A's' sounds great, but its not a SMART goal. Sometimes if students focus on their affective skill goals, that will lead to academic success.
Model Learning From Mistakes:
Failures and setbacks are the BEST times to grow. Having students reflect on those times when things did, and did not, go their way is a sure fire way to see that students have learned their lesson.
Talk About Setbacks:
Encourage students to talk and discuss times when they have had set backs. This normalizes the reality that students struggle. Students can also get ideas from one another about how they have handled and approached set backs and their strategies to succeed.
