The Respiratory System

It doesn't matter what subject or grade level you're teaching, students can demonstrate their understanding by creating a book.

What are students making?

The next organs were the goat's heart and the cow's heart. On the cow's heart was lots of blood and it was so hard, harder than the goat's intestines. It smelled more than the goat's heart and the cow's heart had a lot of fat on it.

We made a Muscular System drawing by making a rubbing off a 2D model of the Muscular System underneath a paper. Then we got a square crayon and we followed the model shape. I was a thinker when we had to follow the hands and the feet while we were rubbing it.

This Unit of Inquiry was the most fun unit that I have ever done because we got to see real organs and we made a book about the Body System using our iPads.

How To Keep The Respiratory System Healthy.

You can keep your lungs healthy by not smoking because when you smoke the tar from the cigarette goes into your lungs and if you keep smoking your lungs won't be able to work much and your lungs will also turn a brownish color not be a pinkish color anymore.

The goat's brain was squishy like a sponge. We cut the brain in half. It was a little bit softer than the goat's intestines.

How The Respiratory System Connects To The Circulatory System

The Respiratory System is connected to the Circulatory System by the alveoli in the lungs. The oxygen goes into the lungs and it is exchanged with carbon dioxide in the alveoli so the carbon dioxide can go out of the body. After the oxygen has been exchanged with carbon dioxide, the blood that has oxygen goes into the heart which is next to the lungs and the heart sends the blood all around the body.

The carbon dioxide goes back out your lungs and through your windpipe then it goes out of your nose.

The first organ I saw was the intestines. The intestines were a bit squishy and hard to cut when we cut it. When it was cut, there was a greenish yellow liquid coming out of it. The intestines felt like hard rubber.

"Our bodies are growing and require maintenance". This central idea means our bodies are growing taller and we need to keep them healthy. In our Unit of Inquiry, we investigated animal organs from a cow and a goat. The goat's brain was squishy, I was a risk taker when I touched the organs. 

On the iPad, I made a book about the Respiratory System. It's my first book that I have ever made with information in it. I was a thinker when I made it because I had to think where I had to put the pictures and the writing in the book.

Why is the Respiratory System connected to the Circulatory System?

The alveoli fills with air and the oxygen passes from the alveoli into the blood vessels.

We played a game called Linkology. It ios a card game. You need to match the cards. For example, the intestines will match with the words Digestive System, and if you don't have 5 cards left you win the game. I was caring becuase I didn't laugh if someone got it wrong.

We made an experiment. Tristan drew a man and we both made the model of lungs using baloons with straws to blow into. It worked just like real lungs. I was a communicator when I had to talk to Tristan about how we would make the lungs model.

The lungs work by the diaphragm muscle that makes your lungs move like a pump, pumping up and down. The carbon dioxide goes out of your lungs and the oxygen in your lungs goes into the blood via the alveoli.
