Document an intergalactic exploration of different planets using Book Creator.

As students create an ebook to spotlight different planets, you might provide a handful of helpful resources. This could include a list of “must-have” vocabulary words students should use in their ebook. You might also decide to create a series of templates students can use for their ebook. In addition to featuring different planets, a space spotlight ebook might include a collection of different constellations or information on famous astronomers. This type of ebook could also contain descriptions of how a telescope works or the stories behind missions to space. You can connect this type of creation to your content area goals.

It’s often hard for students (or adults!) to wrap their head around the size of our solar system. As students learn about space they can create an ebook with a page for each planet. An interactive ebook is the perfect medium for students to combine high-quality images alongside their own research and driving questions.

Students can create a space spotlight ebook as they research different planets in the solar system. You might ask students to include:

The reason they chose to profile a specific planet Three interesting facts they learned Five lingering questions they still have Distance from planet Earth How long it would take to travel there Estimated diameter and circumference of the planet

In this example of a space spotlight ebook, this page includes a list of important facts that can be used as one of the first pages a reader encounters. You might also ask students to create a Table of Contents to help their reader understand what is inside the book they create.

Students can create an ebook showcasing where an animal lives.

Providing students with choices for which animal they will study can help maintain engagement in the task. If you are studying a particular region with your students, you might provide a list of animals for them to choose from that relates to your learning goals. For example, if your students are studying the tundra, you might ask them to choose from a set list of animals like: an arctic fox, caribou, or ermine. Giving students an audience for their work can take many forms. Your students can share their work with classmates, schoolmates or families. Alternatively, you might reach out to an organization that supports conservation of animals and share your creations with their team.

Your students can probably tell you a lot about where they live. As they learn about different animals and what makes each one special, students can design one page for a collaborative ebook that showcases the habitat of the animal they are studying. Each student page can be used for a multi-page class ebook that describes the habitats of animals from around the world!

Students can create an animal habitat ebook to show their reader where an animal lives. You might ask students to include:

Name of an animal Description of where the animal lives Photo or illustration of a map A student video describing the habitat A list of other animals that share the same habitat Key features that make the habitat unique

In this example of an animal habitat ebook, the cover includes the name of the animal and the habitat a student is profiling. You might ask students to profile animal habitats in your community.

Students can add multimedia into an ebook to show what they’ve learned about body systems.

If students are working independently or with a partner to create a multi-page book on one system of the body, you may want to create a checklist or outline. This can help them focus their research on particular guiding questions or organize what they’ve learned. Providing students with an example of a table of contents can also help guide student research. A unit of study on body systems provides a great opportunity to connect students to members of your community. This could include a Skype presentation from a physician who answers student questions about her career. You might also decide to take students on a field trip to a local hospital where they can see diagnostic tools like an X-ray machine.

When students study the systems of a body, they can capture what they have learned using their writing, voice, images and illustrations. From the respiratory system to the circulatory system, each system of the body can lend itself to an individual multi-page ebook or as a single page in a collaborative ebook created by your class.

Celebrate the diversity of life on our planet by creating an interactive ebook on a biome.

Whether your students create an ebook about a terrestrial or aquatic biome, their project can capture a wide range of information. Before students create their biome biodiversity ebook, review the learning goals within your science unit. This can help determine the type of information students should include within their multi-page book like maps or diagrams. As students dive into research about different biomes, their ebook might also include a list of unanswered questions. By adding a page like this to their book, students can show how learning about a topic doesn’t need to have a start or finish date. These questions might spark future research projects or be shared with other classrooms where students are exploring biomes.

The biomes on our planet host a wide variety of both living and nonliving things. Whether your students use words like abiotic and biotic factors of an ecosystem, or can simply list the creatures in a particular part of the world, they can celebrate the biodiversity of a biome. Within the pages of their ebook students can discuss the living and nonliving things you’ll find in different corners of the globe.

In this example of a biome biodiversity ebook, this page includes a graphic organizer to list living and nonliving things you’ll find in this biome. You might ask students to use graphic organizer templates you’ve created or develop their own.

Students can use Book Creator to make an ebook to spotlight each season.

Spring, summer, fall, and winter… each season is unique! In an individual or collaborative, multi-page ebook, students can spotlight their favorite season or profile all four seasons and what makes them special. Perfect for increasing science vocabulary and catering to students’ interests, a seasonal spotlight can be tailored to your science and ELA goals.

Depending on the group of students you are working with, you might ask them to create a graph showing how the weather changes in your city, state, or country during the year. If students create a graph or table in a program like Numbers or Google Sheets, they can add the screenshot to a page of their ebook. Students can also spotlight a season by providing a how-to guide to help a reader prepare for the change in the weather. This type of guide can include tips for how to choose the right clothes for the season. If your region doesn’t experience a big shift in weather during the year, this type of activity might be connected to a profile of a different country.

In this example of a seasonal spotlight ebook, the cover features one season with a clear title and subtitle. You might ask students to include a picture that represents the season on the cover of their book.

Students can create an ebook to describe plant and animal cells. 

One of the greatest benefits of using digital tools in the classroom is how it can transform traditional learning experiences. Instead of having students flip through the pages of a science textbook to read about plant and animal cells, students can create their own interactive books to feature what they’ve learned. If students are working independently or in a small group, they might create an ebook on one type of cell and include one page to describe each part of the cell. Alternatively, a whole class ebook might include pages contributed by different students, who each researched a specific part and created a page to describe its function.

Mitochondria and chloroplast might not be words you and your students use every day. Applying vocabulary in new contexts and sharing learning are essential in the science classroom. As you explore plant and animal cells, individuals, pairs, or the entire class can create an ebook that describes each one.

Students can create a cell structure ebook to profile a plant or animal cell. You might ask students to include:

In this example of a cell structure ebook, this page features one part of a bacteria cell and describes its function using an audio recording. You might ask students to create a diagram out of recycled materials and snap a picture to include in their ebook.

Eating healthy can be interactive when students feature tips and recipes in an ebook! 

Healthy habits are important in the lives of students both inside and outside of the classroom. If your students are studying how to live a healthy life, they can share what they’ve learned with the world in a Healthy Habits ebook. From tips for choosing fruits and vegetables to spotlighting easy exercises, there are so many possibilities!

A unit on healthy habits will look different across grade levels. Younger students might share a favorite healthy snack they love to eat after school. Older students might focus on sharing actionable tips for a specific population like someone with diabetes or celiac disease. Regardless of the content, students can include audio, images, illustrations, text and video on each page! Giving students an audience when they learn about a new topic establishes a purpose for their learning. Students who are exploring a topic like healthy habits can create an ebook specifically for an audience in your school or greater community. You might ask students to brainstorm an audience for their ebook who can be impacted by their work.

Students can create a healthy habits ebook for fellow student readers. You might ask students to include:

A favorite healthy snack An easy-to-try exercise Reasons why healthy eating is important An interview with a nutritionist or health professional A public service announcement created with a video tool Fun facts about healthy eating

In this example of a healthy habits ebook, this page features a recipe for trail mix that includes a variety of nutritious ingredients. You might ask students to interview a classmate after trying their recipe to see what changes they would make in the future.

Use Book Creator to make a multi-page collaborative ebook after a class nature walk.

A nature walk could have a very clear focus such as exploring local plant life or making observations as the seasons change. If there is a focus to your nature walk, you might give students a list of items to look for, and ask them to snap a picture of different leaves or animal prints they see. Giving students a mission during a nature walk can help prepare them for successful ebook creation. If students are taking a device with them on a nature walk, they can capture media to include in their ebook. Students can record a video in front of a pond or record the sounds of birds chirping. In addition to snapping pictures of what they see, students can also use their digital device, or a traditional notebook, to sketch illustrations of their observations.

What happens after a field trip? Students can use Book Creator to respond to a prompt, share a reflection, or write a journal entry about a nature walk. Whether your students snap pictures during their nature walk or share a favorite moment as a video or audio recording when they return to class, the possibilities are endless with Book Creator!

Combining science activities with storytelling is a great way to introduce cross-curricular exploration of content. Students can collect leaves or search for pictures of different types of plants. On a Book Creator page, students can create a person out of leaf shapes and tell an imagined, narrative story about their life!

Students can collect leaves to bring into your classroom. Ask them to arrange the leaves to create a leafy person. With their digital device, students can snap a picture and add the picture to their Book Creator page. In this example of a leafy people ebook, the page includes a picture of a person created with leaves. You might ask students to tell their imagined, narrative story in text format or with an audio recording.

Students can create simple machines and chronicle their process in an ebook.

Simple machines like a pulley, inclined plane, or lever are important concepts for students to grasp. A unit on simple machines can be scaled to different groups of students. Book Creator lets students capture the process of creating their own simple machine by combining text, audio, images, video and illustrations. As students create their own simple machines they can snap pictures and import them onto each page of their ebook. With the pen tool, students can annotate and label their pictures to show the steps of creating a simple machine. The audio recording tool lets students add their voice to each page and can help capture their thinking. Alternatively, you might expect your students to include a paragraph or several sentences explaining their thought process and what they learned.

Explore the parts of a plant and create a collaborative ebook.

If your students have participated in a community walk or trip to a local park, they can snap pictures of the different plants they see. When students know they are going to create a final product to show off their learning, they will understand the purpose of the experience more clearly. With a collaborative ebook, each student can contribute a page within a common theme. For example, you might ask students to pick a different plant found in the rainforest and create a book where each page features a new plant. When a collaborative book is completed, share the link with all students in the class so they can explore the final creation.

As students dive into a unit on plants they can create a collaborative class ebook that captures what they have learned about plant parts. Each student can choose one plant to spotlight and either snap a picture, search for an image or draw a picture of that plant on the page. Students can label the parts of a plant using the Pen feature in Book Creator.

Students can create one page to contribute to a class book on “Plant Parts.” You might ask students to include:

In this example of an ebook on plant parts, a picture of a plant fills most of the page. The shape tool in Book Creator is used to add arrows to the page and the text feature lets the students label each part of the plant.

Students can use Book Creator to make an ebook featuring notable scientists.

A scientist profiles project could connect to a special month like Women’s History Month or National Hispanic Heritage Month. An ebook featuring scientists that fit into a particular category is a great way to make connections to a schoolwide celebration and your curriculum goals. Students can share these books as part of a community event! Pulling names out of a hat might be one way to have students pick a person to research, but it doesn’t usually align with student interests. To introduce students to potential scientists to profile, you can create a YouTube playlist with video clips on a handful of scientists. Students can watch the videos outside of the classroom and come to class with an idea of who they would like to profile.

There are lots of different types of rocks and students of different ages will be expected to talk about rocks in ways that are appropriate for their grade level. For example, you might ask students in Kindergarten to use words like hard or bumpy, and students in high school to discuss erosion and weathering.

Capture weather reports in a daily journal made with Book Creator.

A daily weather journal can extend conversations students might participate in as a whole class. After talking about the day’s weather together, students can create a new page for their weather report journal to chronicle the weather. This activity might take place every day or once a week as students make observations and predictions about the weather. In addition to capturing the local weather in a daily journal, students could also create a weather journal that features different places. For example, if students sitting in a classroom in Australia are learning about Japan, they can use online resources to find the weather in Japan for an international weather journal.

Learning about the weather is important no matter where you live. Your students might see four distinct seasons over the school year, or experience similar temperatures and weather patterns all year round. By creating a daily journal with weather reports, students can track local or faraway weather and learn new vocabulary.
