Creating an ebook is an ideal opportunity to learn a little about basic principles of design and presentation. It could be a good idea to have a class discussion about what makes good design, and what students have learnt from the adverts, packaging and media around them. Here are 9 design tips to get started:

Choose a theme - this communicates the broad theme or idea of your book

Visual unity - is everything on the page balanced?

Colors - which colors best represent your central idea or theme?

Typeface - the main text font needs to be suited to the type of genre you are working with.

Placement - every item on a page should be placed with purpose. Pictures can say a thousand words!

Contrast - think about using size, colour, shape and proximity to make key ideas stand out.

Minecraft is such a popular app, it makes sense to look beyond simply playing the game

This child had the basis for a story in his mind but it was too big for him to contemplate writing it entirely in text. Instead, he used the screenshots to build a 65 page comic about three bickering astronauts and their journey into space!

Hi. I'm here for you one teacher in the Pilbara Western Australia students have been using one to one iPads and using Book Creator for many activities throughout

the day. Here's a few examples of early childhood classroom.

Book Creator is really enhanced literacy sessions within the classroom from things such as handwriting will use it for when I find a partner and they have to

talk about where the letters are on the dotted thirds before I hand writing lessons. We've also used it as a prompts before writing text structures such as three counts and

learning Journey where parents come in and I'll Book Creator to get the children to take photos of the things that they learnt about and they spoke about them and recorded

their voice so that they would remember on the night and I also use it as well for myself to collect data from the app numbers, and I found it. This is

really good, because all my assessment is kept in one booklet keeping all the data in one place is been quite helpful because it means I can send out that

information to remember I need to through pdf documents or other file formats, and it also means that I'm archiving. The things that I need to keep for several years

Go retro and actually print the books you make in Book Creator

Note: All printers are different! You may have to play around with your printer settings to get the desired result.

Sometimes having a tangible hard copy of a book can be just as rewarding for students (and parents) as hearing the audio and video in a book. Follow these steps to get a professional quality book.

Will you print and bind the book in school? You may like to get a professional printing company to hard bind the book for you. Find a local company and let them work with your PDF file for the best result.

Make a cover. This is very important. The cover needs to connect and tell visually the content of the book.

STEP 2: TEXT, IMAGE SPACING AND ALIGNMENT

At this stage you will need to check that all objects &#8211; either text or images, are not too close to the edges of the pages as printing will need a little space. Often when a book is printed, the printer needs to cut and crop a little.

STEP 3: MAKE A TEST PRINT FIRST

This is to check that all text boxes ‘behave’ and that you haven’t missed any errors. Sometimes when you <a href="https://intercom.help/bookcreator/en/articles/2398647-export-your-book-as-a-pdf-file">convert an ePub to a PDF</a>, the text needs a little room so that it doesn’t drop an ’s’ or part of a word onto the next line.

STEP 4: PRINT THE BOOK WITH DOUBLE-SIDED PAGES

Print the cover and back page separately. Then print the inside pages using double-sided page settings.

You have to make a penguin book at some stage of your childhood

We see a lot of penguin books. We even use a penguin book for <a href="https://vimeo.com/141388643">most of our promo videos</a>. Everyone loves penguins!

Looking for a resource? Anita Goodwin started with this <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/WINTER-NONFICTION-EXPOSITORY-READING-AND-WRITING-UNIT-POLAR-ANIMALS-1628224">Polar Animals Writer&#8217;s Workshop</a> from Teachers Pay Teachers.

Anita scaffolded the process by creating a template book and AirDropping it to each of her students in advance. Students added their facts to the template and sourced images from <a href="http://www.photosforclass.com/search?text=penguins">Photos For Class</a>, before exporting the books to the iBooks app so other students could read them.

Her class then researched information on penguins from a variety of media, including <a href="http://www.pebblego.com/">PebbleGo</a>. The students did a week of research before starting the creation process for their books.

Video and audio come into their own when teaching phonics. Be creative with the letters!

Here's why making a phonics book could be useful for younger students:

Creating rather than absorbing content is proven to produce higher retention rates in students.

You have something to refer back to and further reinforce understanding.

The ability to record audio means bilingual books are simple to create

Students worked on their ebooks with the goal that the best books would be <a href="https://bookcreator.com/2013/11/pro-tips-publish-itunes-step-1-create-itunes-connect-account/">published online via the iBooks Store</a>.

In the Philippines, students learnt Mandarin by following Jim Tuscano&#8217;s <a href="http://bookcreator.com/blog/2016/04/the-5ds-framework-for-integrating-technology-in-the-classroom/">5Ds </a><a href="https://twitter.com/BookCreatorApp/status/718929281880076288">Framework for Tech Integration</a>.

Students thought of what they wanted to share about their parents, hobbies and clothes.

Students went through a vocabulary practice to learn how to write and read the new Chinese words. Aside from using their Chinese textbooks, the students also had vocabulary games using iPad apps such as <a href="https://quizlet.com/en-gb">Quizlet</a>.

The students created ebooks that contained details about them and their family. They created short paragraphs or stories containing the words they learned.

Feedback were given to students via formative activities such as practice quizzes. In order to prepare for the project, the teacher also asked them to work on a draft that would guide them in creating their books.

Let students dictate how they want to smash apps to create the final product

Use the camera roll to save and move content between apps.

That's what Erin McNamara did when her students came to re-tell a classroom favourite: 'The Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. Students had used the app <a href="https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/art-set/id469918702">Art Set</a> to create illustrations of the events – and one clever cookie in the class suggested “Let’s save the pictures and put them into Book Creator!”

Let students choose their own apps. Students are more engaged when they are doing something they actually want to do.

Encourage students to select apps based on their features. The apps need to be able to match the learning outcomes.

Start small. Before being able to app smash, students need to have a strong understanding of the apps they are using, their features and the possibilities.

Creation, not consumption. App smashing is about being a creative and critical thinker. What creation based apps do you have that could work together?

This teacher had a theory: using Book Creator in his science class would make students more engaged.

The conclusion: It worked extremely well!

The books&#160;provided a&#160;memory aid&#160;for&#160;students because they were be able to look again at photographs of the apparatus and videos from the experiment alongside their written work and diagrams.
