In the Science classroom, students can use emojis as symbols that represent an idea or correspond to a piece of information. Infographics use symbols to help express an idea or emphasize a data point. With emojis, students can use visual representations to connect an idea to a piece of research as they prepare to share their learning with the world.

Comic panels are an excellent way of creating template pages and cropping different size images to fit. However, they are only available in Comic books!!

My first book, The Big Picture the content was photography and media rich, so I decided to mix this with some bold colors and hand drawn elements for a very graphic, playful feel. You can see in the Pages view how a theme began to come together, by repeating a few colours and fonts across the pages.

Getting started on a new book is always the hardest part, and I ALWAYS doubt my ability to pull it off. My best tip for this is to loosely map out the content across the pages, and then start moving things around a piece at a time, trying text and layout ideas and looking for a way in. There are always clues in the content on where to start, you just have to find them! Other less esoteric considerations: What does the content say? What is the tone of voice? Who is the audience? This development process can take time, but slowly a theme emerges and you will discover techniques which can be applied across the other pages. I call this process Content-led design.

It inspired the students and they co-created artwork to include in this book. We photographed their plasticine art and uploaded it into Book Creator.
