Exploring the theme of community, my 1st grade students wrote and designed an ABC book wherein each letter in the alphabet relates to a noun about our school.

Examples of books made by students in elementary / primary school - grades 1 to 5.

Elementary books

O is for office, because Ms. Robyn in the office helps  you if you get  hurt.

is for uniforms, because we wear them.  We can wear blue or green dresses or shirts. The boys have to wear kippot.

is for Jewish Studies. We learn to read and write in Hebrew. On Fridays, First Grade celebrates Shabbot with traditional Israeli dancing.

is for Field trip, because they are good for learning different things. We see shows on the books that we read, go to the science museum, and go to an animal farm.

is for iPads, because we use them to take AR tests, STAR tests, play games, and make  this book with them! 

is for Music. In music we learn different instruments. We learn the Gettysburg Address. The school is doing a performance.

is for eXperiments. Experiments are good for the school , because we can learn not to do some experiments again. 

is for Daily 5, because we learn how to read. We learn to write better. We learn to spell.

is for recess, because it helps us have fun and it helps us get our work done faster because it gives us oxygen for our brains.

is for Kosher. It means that Jewish people eat only food that is allowed to be eaten. We keep meat and dairy separate. We keep our silverware separate. Jews were told to keep kosher by God. We eat kosher food at school.

is for Zikaron, because it means memory in English. Zikaron is a Hebrew word. Zikaron helps us remember the things that we learned.

is for Nature, because we have beautiful trees and plants all around us. We have birds. We have a park and jungle gym where we can run and play games. 

is for Questions, because teachers can answer our questions. Questions help you learn about things.

is for Science, because science helps us learn experiments. We also learn about the moon.

is for books, because we can find books in the classroom and in the school library. Books help us learn to read.

MJGDS ABCs: A Book About Our Jewish Day School

is for Prayer, because we pray in Jewish studies a lot with our Siddur. And it is important to God.

is for yarmulke, because every boy and man in our school wears one. We also call it a kipah in Hebrew. This shows that God is above.

is for writing, because we write in our journals a lot. Usually we answer questions but sometimes we solve math problems.

is for library, because that is where you find books. We also skype with authors and classes. We check out books. Sometimes we have storytime. 

is for courtyard, because we have recess. Sometimes we eat snack outside. Sometimes we see butterflies in the flowers.

is for General Studies, because we learn math and Daily 5. It is the English side of the day. We do word work and work on writing.

is for Haktivah, because it is important. It shows respect for Israel. We do it every morning.

is for art, because we learn about different artists and their art. We learn how to draw better. We use different paint and colors.

is for Volunteers, because they help our school raise money, make things for shows, work at the book fair, get challah for the school.

is for everybody books, because they help us learn. They have beautiful pictures and everybody can learn by reading everybody books.

is for teachers, because teachers help us learn things. For example, teachers show us respect.
