HITLER YOUTH

The Hitler Youth was a large group of children in Nazi Germany who were supposed to carry on the "legacy" of Nazi Germany. The Hitler Youth was valued as much as going to school would have been. By 1936, the Hitler youth had a total of over 4 million members.

Living Conditions in Japanese Internment Camps

"The camps represented a prison: No freedom, no privacy, no America" (Okubuz) 

After Pearl Harbor, on February 19th, 1942: President Roosevelt signed a law known as the Executive Order 9066 that moved all Japanese Americans into internment camps. They were given 48 hours to evacuate and were only permitted to bring a few things. Every camp was to be guarded by U.S. military personnel.

Disney WWII Propaganda During the war Disney was commissioned to make educational films for every branch of the government and also the public. Although the thought of ninety thousand feet intimidated Disney ( because annually they created about twenty thousand feet of film) they gladly accepted the challenge! Although loved for their delightful animation abilities they were praised for their propaganda films throughout the war. Disney created many anti-Japanese and anti-German films for soldiers and the U.S public as requested by the government. A film called "Reason and Emotion" is one of the more popular films although there are many others. Such as; "Der Fuehrers Face", "Education for Death-The Making of a Nazi" and one of the more comical films, "Commando Duck." Reason and Emotion showed the public that Hitler relied off of these major emotions; fear, sympathy and pride which convinced German's Hitler was reasonable. The image on the right shows the human mind, reminding us that reason (the sensible man dressed in blue) should lead our thoughts through these times. While the rowdy, almost caveman character Emotion is taking a back seat, pouting. I believe it was Disney's comical yet practical approach that allowed these films, this one specifically to resonate with young viewers as well as those who were more mature.

Yearbooks during WWII at Alliance were a great way to really see how the war was affecting the high school students. In the 1941 yearbook everything seemed really similar to what we would be doing today, pictures of every student were included as well as school activities and staff. As the years go on the yearbooks became more and more patriotic. In the final year that the U.S. was involved in the war, 1945, the yearbook was very patriotic. They dedicated their yearbook to future generations and students who they hoped would not have to go through everything they had, such as the stress of the war they had because of their families who were involved in it. The war greatly influenced all of their lives and we can learn about the people who used to be in our own high school by seeing how they made their yearbooks over time. 

Conglomeration of his written, first hand account, newspaper articles in 1943 &amp; 1944. They were about what happened to common soldiers on and off of the battlefield.

Pyle wrote about people from all corners of the country learning to become soldiers so the Allies could win the war. He documented normal soldiers lives and wrote things that no one else noticed and written in other papers.

An account of six survivors of the atomic bomb that devastated Japan. The six survivors, Father Wilhelmina Kleinsorge, Hatsuyo Nakamura, Toshiko Sasaki, Dr. Terufuni Sasaki, Reverend Kiyushi Tanimoto, and Dr. Masakazu Fujii, all told what they were during August 6th 1945.

Joachim Peiper German SS tank commander. During World War 2 he had battles on both the eastern and western fronts. From his service he earned the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. One battle that Peiper and his all armored division are remembered  for is the Battle of the Buldge. Peiper during this campaign was given control of the Nazi's newest war machine, the 70 ton King tiger tank. All though some of these new inventions were unimaginable for the allies there was a downfall. The Nazi's king tiger only averaged half a mile a gallon. The first panzer division almost turned the tides of WW2 had they not run out of gas. The allies were able to cut off the first panzer by taking out bridges needed by the Nazi's and better weather allowed American attacks. With being cut off from fuel and being attacked from the rear they had nowhere to go.

People who ran concentration camps and SS wanted no one to be able to tell their story about what happened while they were captive. Some SS used Jewish prisoners from the concentration camps as hostages to try to escape the Germans after the war.

Any prisoners who fell down or couldn't keep up were shot. It was cold and some didn't even have shoes to wear. Many prisoners died of exposure, starvation, and exhaustion.

Holocaust survivors Herta Goldman and Lea Frank Holitz describe the death marches. The video is an excerpt from the film "Death Marches" in the Holocaust History Museum in Yad Vashem.

Jews were Identified by a number, not by there name.

The most major operations moved prisoners from Auschwitz, Stutthof, and Gross-Rosen westward to Buchenwald, Flossenbürg, Dachau, and Sachsenhausen in winter 1944 to 1945; from Bunchenwald and Flossenbürg to Dachau and Mauthausen in spring 1945; and from Sachsenhausen and Neuengamme northwards to the Baltic Sea in the last weeks of war. Later after was liberation.

In Call of Duty World at War you can play in the pacific theater or the eastern front from WW2.  In the game you can use weapons such as the Springfield or Mp40 that were used during WWII.  The player can also use grenades like the grenades used in WWII.  In the campaign you have a mission at the Battle of Seelow near Berlin, which was an actual battle in WWII between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.  Another mission is at the Battle of Stalingrad which was the bloodiest battle in the history of warfare.  All in all this game is  mostly historically accurate except all the characters are fictional and so are some of the places where the events take place.

The Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. E or Tiger I (left) was also a heavy tank mainly used in independent heavy tank battalions. The Tiger I was the predecessor to the Tiger II. The Tiger I weighed about 54 metric tons. The Tiger I had frontal hull armor 100 mm thick. It was armed with a 56-caliber long 88 mm KwK 36. It's been said to have been an outstanding design for its time. However it was over-engineered, using very expensive materials. Only 1,347 were made and were made between August 1942 and Auguest 1944. 

The Königstiger or Tiger II (right), also known as the Royal Tiger through direct translation, was a German heavy tank used by heavy tank battalions throughout WWII. The Tiger II was the successor of the Tiger I. The tank weighed nearly 70 metric tons. The front was protected with anywhere from 100 to 180 mm of armor. It's armament was an 8.8cm KwK 43 L/71 gun. The tank saw service just in 1944 to 1945 with only 412 being made.

Part of the war effort was that the government rationed foods like sugar, butter, milk, cheese, eggs and canned foods.

Planting victory gardens helped make sure there was enough food for the American soldiers fighting around the world.

Citizens planted Victory Gardens to provide their own fruits and vegetables.

Victory Gardens were responsible for about 40 % of all vegetables grown in the United States.

At the peak there were more than 20,000,000 Victory Gardens planted across the United States.

• The first Heer uniform was the Heeres Dienstanzung Modell 1936 -a.k.a the M36 *All the uniforms are named M something I'm guessing for Modell and release year

• The M40 was the first change in the Heer standard uniforms -Changed the color from Feldgrau (which is a grayish color) on the collar &amp; shoulder straps to Bottle Green (which apparently is a color)

• M40, M41, M42, &amp; M43 are the "main" Heer uniforms -The M40 was the real main the others just had minor differences ex. The M41 had 1 more button than the M40

President Franklin Roosevelt called December 7, 1941 “A date which will live in infamy”. On that day the Japanese started an air based attack on the U.S. Naval Base located in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. When the Japanese attacked they destroyed almost 20 U.S. Naval vessels, including 8 battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 Americans died and another 1,000 were wounded from the attacks. Although the attack was a surprise to the United States, they had been edging towards war with Japan for years. The United States was very unhappy with Japan's actions towards their neighboring country of China. The Japanese government believed that the only way to solve their country's demographic and economic problems would be to expand into the neighboring country and over China's import market. By the end of 1937, Japan had declared war on China. The United States responded to Japan’s actions by initiating an oil embargo. The U.S. believed that if the Japanese would lose access to basic resources such as oil that they would have to slow down or completely stop their expansion efforts.

Dress Uniform: Dress Uniform consisted of a Santiago Blue skirt and blazer. And a white shirt and tie. 

Leather Flying Gear: During Cold months Women would wear heavy leather suits (in men sizes only). 

Flying Uniform: While Flying women wore an olive green jumper, and black leather boots. Women were also issued a black leather jacket.

       The Invasion of Normandy, also more commonly known as D-day, took place on June 6, 1944. The invasion took place in Europe, and is credited to be the beginning of the end in Europe. D-day was an invasion by the western Allied forces in Normandy, and is the largest amphibious invasion in history. The Allied forced needed this to work, so they rehearsed their D-day roles for months before the attack. The invasion began with overnight glider and parachute landings, along with air attacks and naval bombardments. The invasion fleet was taken from 8 separate navies. Putting up about 7,000 vessels, 1,200 warships, 4,000 transport vessels, 700 ancillary craft, and 860 merchant vessels. D-day was the biggest land, air, and sea attack prior to and since this day. Sadly, we suffered almost 10 thousand casualties, with more than 4000 men dead. Thanks to good preparation and planning Europe had been severely hit.

Compare and contrast internment and concentration camps

By mid 1940s the percentage of women in the American work force had expanded from 25% to 36%.

One out of every four married women worked outside the home in 1945

Women on the Homefront worked in defense plants and volunteered for war-related organizations and managing their households.

Men and young men were recruited to fight during WW2 so that means the work back at home needed to be done by women. Rosie the Riveter became one of the most successful recruitment tools in American History, also the most iconic image for women during the WW2 era.

After the war many women wanted to keep their jobs but were forced out by the men returning home.

Medal Of Honor Gameplay

The Medal of Honor series, is a first person shooter game that was created in 1999. It's first 12 installments of the game focus on WW2. Many of the main story lines are about the OSS, but occasionally the plot shift to front line combat. The game itself is similar to what WW2 soldiers experienced. The artillery in the game follows suit to what realistically would have been present at the time. Now seen as very basic things like Rifles, tanks, planes, ect. Are being introduced to the character of the game for the first time. However, because it is a game, it easily also becomes very different from actual WW2 battles. Through a screen you loose all the emotional and mental struggles many soldiers faced during WW2. You don't really get the same "feeling" for the game as you would maybe reading about historical WW2 events.

Men's clothing during World War Two

During World War Two, many of the men wore similar outfits. These outfits included: suits with wide shoulders, and we're pleated. The trousers normally worn were high waisted. The people were given "clothing coupons" which entitled them to items of clothing. They would start out with a specific number of coupons but as the war progressed, the coupon amount decreased. Limiting their clothing availability. The men's clothes were rationed which means they only allowed each person to have a fixed amount of pieces. The reason for the decrease in coupons was because of resources that needed to be saved for other purposes. The materials that clothes were made out of were more helpful for different reasons. Most of the suits or clothes of men during the world war, were dark colors like navy blue or black. Another new trend during the World War was men began wearing "zoot suits" which were normally worn in night clubs. They consisted of big jackets, lapels, low crotches and broad shoulders. During this time, the pant legs on the suits got narrower toward the ankles. After the war, men's fashion changed drastically. The newest invention or style of clothing was the Hawaiian shirts. They were normally worn on the beach, and the patterns included floral designs and some even had flames on them. Another popular item during this time was the esquire jacket. This jacket was broad shouldered and were loose fitting. Men's clothing styles changed an incredible amount from the start of World War Two to the end of it. It still continues to change till this day, and now we look back on what was popular those days and some of it may come back into style while some others stay in history.

In August 1939, Einstein wrote to President Roosevelt to tell him that Germany had been working on an atomic bomb. In 1941 the Manhattan project was lunched by the government . The Manhattan project was a project that was made in 1942 to make the first nuclear weapon. The United States were scared that Germany would make a Nuclear weapon during the war and use it. 

Nazism is the religion in belief that the Germans have the complete power and that they are the supreme of the people. Hitler convinced the Germans to fight back and take what was theirs. But he could not be leader or dictator. Then he forced his way into power and began taking border lands and lands that were lost from the treaty of Versailles. Hitler and most of Germany were tired of being at fault for WW1. Hitler discriminated  any race other than German. When he came to power he forced any jews or jewish ancestry into concentration camps to be worked to death,slaughtered, or burned to death.

Jazz music became part of the 1940's pop culture rather ominously. With no warning, contemporary tunes turned into bubbly jazz and upbeat swing. By 1940, 96.2% of Northeastern American households had a radio. In the south, one radio was accounted for for every two households. American troops knew the musical language, too. Soldiers had radios, some for themselves, and some to share. They knew songs, artists, and even certain recordings. Some nights the soldiers found themselves huddled around a fire sharing one radio for everyone, just to listen to the sweet tunes that brought them back home. The music was a temporary getaway, a rhythmic hope that someday they could return hope to a peaceful America. Jazz was a whole new style of music in pop culture. Often, pianos, trumpets, cymbals and drums were the main attraction. If a song was accompanied by and singer's voice, it made the whole shebang even better. In swing music -the stuff that everyone from four to eighty-four couldn't resist tapping their toes to -was quick, jumpy, and upbeat. It really made you want to swing. New terms like, "passing chords" and "substitute chords" came about. They were chords combined with layers of other ones, to make a unique sound. Harmonies were sophisticated, with snare and bass drums to carry the rapid beats in the explosive songs.

• The Last WWII Heer uniform was the Field Blouse Modell 1944 or M44 - First big change since the M36 because they wanted to cut tailoring &amp; production costs - Changed the color to "Feldgrau 44" which is a greenish-brown color - Added an internal belt, shortened waist length on the tunic skirt, and the tunic could be worn with an open or closed collar - Was usually only worn by newer troops towards the end of the war

The Gestapo was the police force during the era of Nazi Germany. 

The Gestapo would persecute people such as Jews, the disabled, homosexuals, and other minorities. They would persecute similar peoples that the Nazis themselves would. 

The Gestapo would gather a list of people who they believed had the potential to be enemy of the State. The Gestapo could do what they pleased to the people on this list. 

(The Gestapo would single out Jews, the Star of David is a sacred symbol to the Jews.)

1943 uniforms had a lower waist then the earlier years. These ones have four larger belt loops to help keep your pants up. They we called The M1943 Field trousers. The shirts an pants were all made out of the same material. They were just dyed a different color. 1940 the shirts an pants were all slate gray.

The big change from the 1943 uniform and 1944 uniform was the shirts. The big change was the length of the shirts. Another change from 1943 to 1944 in uniforms was the pants now have a buckled waistband which helped keep your pants up. They were called self supporting trousers.  This means they could be worn without a belt or suspenders.

Winston Churchill Winston Churchill was prime minister in Great Britain in 1940- 1945, then again in 1951-1955. Many people saw Churchill as a beacon of light, as hope for a better tomorrow. They saw him this way because he could move a crowd with his words. He persuaded people to see him as the hero they all thought him to be. Churchill started WWII under the current prime minister of the time, Neville Chamberlain. As the war went on, he moved up in the military to the first lord of Admiralty and a member of the war cabinet. Although Chamberlain was ignoring Churchill - clearly underestimating the power the Nazi’s had - he didn’t last in office for much longer. The use of insignia grew dramatically during WW2. The previous blue denim fatigue was replaced with an olive drab. The uniform included herringbone cotton twill treated with an anti-vesicant compound. This compound was used as a chemical protective garment. This became very useful during the war along with other minor improvements made.

The navy was the first branch to seek educational help from Disney

Disney created a number of anti-German and anti-Japanese films not only for soldiers but also for the public

The Navajo code talkers joined the armed forces in WW1 and WW2. These were American Indians who were asked to use their language as a code that could transfer messages that the enemies could not decipher. The way that this worked was by a soldier revieving a string of unrelated Navajo words. They would then translate that to English words. If all of the first letters synced up, that was the next letter in the new word.

     The enemies never decoded the Navajo language, and it was a successful aid in many attacks. The Navajo language was chosen because it was a "hidden language", with no written alphabet. Only the Navajo people could understand it fully. The creator of this master plan was Phillip Johnston, who spent his childhood speaking Navajo. 

A captured Navajo soldier who was released said "I never did figure out what you guys who got me into all that trouble were saying" 

Commando Duck was first released on June 2, 1944 by RKO Radio Pictures. The cartoon was produced by Walt Disney and directed by Jack King. In the cartoon, Donald Duck is drafted into the army, then ventures into the jungle of a remote pacific island to destroy a Japanese airfield. After he lost most of his equipment during his landing, he continues down the river on a rubber life raft. While traveling he is ambushed by several Japanese soldiers in camouflage, but mistakes their bullets for mosquitoes and continues with his mission.

His life raft later explodes causing a large amount of water to splash on to the airfield, whipping out all of the soldiers, leaving disfigured airplanes. After seeing the destroyed airfield, Donald proudly declares his mission a success. The cartoon expresses obvious anti-Japanese behavior, but due to its focus on Donald's mission instead of the racial aspects of the enemy, and the removal of most of the Japanese references, has been allowed to be broadcasted on modern television. The cartoon is, however, a burlesque of the Imperial Japanese Army. Also included in the short is a reference to Hirohito, a former emperor of Japan reigning from December 25, 1926 until January 7, 1989. The Japanese soldiers also speak stereotypical dialect and advocate firing the first shot at a man's back.

Dorris Miller served in the U.S Navy as a Messman(1939-1943). The morning of December 7, 1941, Miller was doing laundry when called to the battle stations. In the attack on Pearl Harbor, Miller was first assigned to help carry the captain and executive officer to first aid. Then he was given the duty of manning an anti-aircraft machine gun without training whatsoever. He even quoted how easy it was, " It wasn't that hard. I pulled the trigger and she worked fine. I fired her for about 15 minutes and I think I hit one of those Jap planes." Due to his excellence, he was given many awards including the Navy Cross.

The M1 Carbine formally designated the "United States Carbine, Caliber .30, M1" is a lightweight semi-automatic repeating rifle. Although the M1 Garand was the official standard issue rifle of the day the M1 Carbine actually saw higher production and distribution during WW2. The Name "carbine" generally refers to a long rifle, such as the M1 Garand, that has been shortened but the M1 Carbine has no parent rifle which makes it unique in the gun community. The weapon was issued to special forces such as mortar teams and Paratroopers for its small size and light weight which allowed it to be carried along with whatever other gear said specialized forces needed

The Colt Model 1911 formally designated the "United States Pistol Caliber .45, M1911" was the United States Military's answer to the need of a new general issue side-arm. The M1911 replaced other heavy caliber revolvers. Other attempts for the style of firearm were thrown out either because of the unreliability of the weapons or because the weapon lacked the man stopping power of the .45 ACP. The .45 was the ideal weapon and the 1911 has seen more service then nearly any other weapon. The M1911 was the standard issue sidearm of officers during WW2 and was only replaced relatively recently in the 80's by the 9mm Beretta and some factions such as the special forces still rely on the .45 1911 

 The M1 Garand, officially the "U.S. rifle, caliber .30, M1", is a long rifle which throws the .30-06 Springfield round more commonly known as the .308 Winchester. The Rifle ,named after its creator John Garand, was the first standard-issue semi-automatic rifle the military used. During WW2 it gave the US soldiers an edge over the Axis soldiers who were still using bolt-action rifles. The gas-operated rifle's most notable design feature is the audible "ping" noise when the empty magazine is automatically ejected. Today the M1 is used in drills

The Tuskegee Airmen were a well dedicated group of African American young men who volunteered to become America's first and best black military Airmen. As in every other military branch of the U.S., those who possessed the mental, physical, and emotional qualifications were trained to become bombardiers, pilots, and navigators. Aside from being discriminated because of racial status, the Tuskegee Airmen took the ultimate step in looking past the discriminatory remarks and showings. Being referred to as " Negros" or the terms they decided to use back then, didn't phase them. Their minds were higher than that. Yes, the remarks sometimes got up under their skin, but that didn't stop the overall task from being done. The 332nd all-black Fighter Group consisted of 4 fighter squadrons. The 99th, the 100th, the 301st, and the 302nd. From1941-1946, an estimated 1,000 black pilots were trained in Tuskegee. The Tuskegee Airmen were recognized for not only the accomplishment of being black in the Military Air Forces, but they also held and currently still have the record for the lowest loss record in escorting bomber planes. The 99th Squadron was awarded with Presidential Unit Citations between June and July of 1943 and May of 1944 for their tactical air support and aerial combat. The 332nd Fighter Group was also awarded with a Presidential Unit Citations for its longest escort mission to Berlin(popular scene from the movie Red Tails.) During the mission, the Tuskegee Airmen destroyed 3 German ME-262 jet fighters. The Airmen weren't done there, they received help. During WW2 Adolf Hitler rose to power, to create a system of concentration camps where millions of Jews and other people were killed by the Nazis. 

Diseases such as typhus, typhoid fever, and tuberculosis spread rampantly. Typhus spread by lice or fleas. This is why the inmates heads were shaved, to try to keep disease from spreading. Inmates rarely had access to any clean water. Typhoid fever spreads through dirty water making this disease common. Tuberculosis spread through the air, making it very easy to catch this deadly disease. 

Seven hundred people or more would be assigned to a barrack. They slept on either wooden or brick three tier bunks. It was very overcrowded and lacked heating and sanitary facilities. Straw mattresses were unclean and barracks often had leaky roofs and many sorts of rats. Due to these conditions, disease spread rapidly through the camps.

In an attempt to escape being caught, korematsu changed his identity to 'Clyde sarah,' and he got plastic surgery so he would appear to be Caucasian.

Fred Korematsu was a young, Japanese-American citizen that lived in, and was born in the U.S. in 1919. Like all Americans, he was proud of his country and of his freedom. He was one of the first generations of his family to be a free American. In 1941, Korematsu worked in a shipyard. When Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, he immediately experienced discrimination. On February 19, 1942 Executive order 9066 was signed, which stated that all Japanese-Americans would be moved to internment camps. Korematsu did not agree with this order, because he believed he was equal to everyone else born in America, so he and his Caucasian girlfriend planned to flee. This plan fell through, and Korematsu was captured, and charged. He was found guilty of violating a military order, and was sentenced to five years of probation. After WW2, Korematsu was released, but the arrest would remain on his personal record until 1983. In 1998, Korematsu was given The Presidential Medal of Freedom. He died in 2005, a free American Citizen.

They organized in secret because the treaty of Versailles limited Germany's military power. in September the Luftwaffe had over 2000 planes and at their highest they had 119,871 planes with 3.9 million in service.
