The effects were lasting, bringing a somber darkness to visual art, literature, and music. The dreadful trauma of this era instigated the imaginations of writers and painters in worrying and unsettling ways for decades to follow. The insecurity of daily survival created a atmosphere of gloom and doom influencing artist to move away from optimistic themes and turn to images of Hell,&nbsp;Satan&nbsp;and the Grim Reaper. Many painters simply gave up art believing that it was hopeless to try and create beauty in a hellish world" (history of painters). This quote expresses how everyone was terrified of the plague and it seriously affected their optimism in life and their general mood when painting. &nbsp;

"During his lifetime Hieronymus Bosch was a celebrated and respected master painter. His work was commissioned and collected by royalty, the church and wealthy patrons"(historyofpainters). Bosch was one of the few painters that has survived the black plague and he was also considered a visionary later in life. Bosch painted things like biblical scenes because he was a very religious man.

Some more really important history that has to do with the black plague according to (history). "&#160;Over the next five years, the Black Death would kill more than 20 million people in Europe"(history). The black plague one of the most deadly diseases know to date. The black plague hindered the amount of art but not the quality.

The plague doctor was a huge part of the medieval plague ages they wore beak masks according to white frances "Plague doctors wore a mask with a bird-like beak to protect them from being infected by the disease, which they believed was airborne. In fact, they thought disease was spread by miasma, a noxious form of &#8216;bad air.&#8217; To battle this imaginary threat, the long beak was packed with sweet smells, such as dried flowers, herbs and spices". The plague doctors at that point were basically not qualified enough to solve the illness. They gave ridiculous remedies like drinking tonics and other weird things.

The black plague was a serious hurdle for all artists new and old because the black plague at the time basically had no cure. Most of the artists at the time about 40% had already died due to the black plague. "Entire towns were wiped out" according to cdc.gov.

The plague originated in Asia but it moved its way to Europe in 1347 when 12 ships from the Black Sea docked at the Sicilian port of Messina. "Even before the &#8220;death ships&#8221; pulled into port at Messina, many Europeans had heard rumors about a &#8220;Great Pestilence&#8221; that was carving a deadly path across the trade routes of the Near and Far East. Indeed, in the early 1340s, the disease had struck China, India, Persia, Syria and Egypt" (History). Even before the main outbreak, the disease was picking up traction.

Durer was heavily affected by the black plague and was influenced by many artists of that time to paint about the gloomy conditions.

The old medieval order imposed by the Church was buckling under the expansion of towns, the rise of the merchant class, the emergence of national states, the spread of religious reform and&#160;invention of the printing press. People were becoming fascinated with science, political affairs and far off places. Matthias Gr&#252;newald was born at the beginning of the modern world"(history of painters). grunewald's era was plagued with change still disease and probably everything else bad you could think of. he was born 1434 and died 1494. Of his time in the medieval era he was viewed as one of the best gothic artists.
