His parents would be back in two hours. Jack decided to check out what could have made the loud noise. First, he checked the kitchen. Nothing. Then, he checked his parents room. Again, nothing. Jack did quickly fix their bed because he liked things to be neat. He checked the dining room and STILL nothing. Living room - nothing. Only one more place, Jack thought. The dark and scary basement! He never goes down there. Jack thought hard but decided he had to go. First, I needed to get prepared. Flash light? Check! Let's go! I can't believe I'm doing this, Jack thought to himself. Just then he heard a thump from down below.

"I never thought those spells worked! Oh thank you. I've been waiting for this moment" Storm said. "How old are you, Storm?" Jack asked. "13!" "Oh! I'm 12. I've always wanted a pet cat but my parents wouldn't let me get one" Jack said. "That's nice but we have to get going!" " Wait, Where is the book?" Storm said. "Uh I think he's in the living room." Jack said. "Do you have other books?" Storm asked. "Yep!" "Great!" Storm yelled but then quickly stopped. "So you must have read the evil book aloud to make it appear?" "Yeah...I couldn't help it. I snuck into my parent's room after they left. 

*Ring Ring Ring* It was Bax on FaceTime. Jack answered. "Show me." Bax said. "You probably don't want to see." Jack said. "Show me!" Bax yelled in a serious voice. "Bax, please you don't want to know." "SHOW ME!!!" Bax demanded. "Okay, Okay!" Jack said clearly surprised. Jack went downstairs as quietly as he could. "There it is." Jack said forgetting to whisper. Of course the book noticed. "Got a friend, kid?" The tone of his voice reminded him of when he was little and some bullies hurt him. So Jack didn't answer. He didn't have to.

He looked at the clock. Still one hour and thirty minutes left. "Book!" Jack yelled in case the book could talk. No answer. Jack sighed, "What am I thinking? Books can't talk." Just then the book moved. "Open me up kid!!!" the book said in a dark voice. "Uh NO!" Jack yelled as he ran upstairs. Jack thought hard. Minecraft. It was the only thing Jack could think of... he loved playing it every day! He played with his friends and even sometimes his dad and mom. Maybe it could help him think of a solution. Jack logged on and set it to creative mode. Jack started to make the evil book in Minecraft. Just then there was a knock on the his bedroom door. "Hell-o?" Jack said very scared.

"What do you need a key for??" "It's a long story, but it has to do with an evil book." Jack said. "He's back?" Storm said. "You know him?" Jack said as his eyes got really REALLY big! "Yeah, he's the one who turned me into a cat." Storm said. "I was a kid just like you. This used to be my house until my family moved out and yours moved in a month ago." "Doesn't your family miss you?" Jack asked. "I doubt it. I have such a big family. I was the last kid born, the youngest and always felt left out. So now I live here in the basement." "I think I can help you turn back into a human again." Jack said. "I was just reading a magical spell book. Then you can go back to your family."

Chapter 3 "Go get that crazy book!" Storm said. "Are you sure?" "If you need me, I will help you." said Storm. "I will do my best" Jack said proudly thinking to himself that he's not a little kid anymore. "OK you got this buddy!" said Storm. "I'm on it!" Jack said. Jack was all ready to get that evil book, but instead he sat down and started to think. If Storm and I found the key, neither of us would have to beat up the book. "Good idea," Storm said. " What? How do you know what I'm thinking?" "Magic" Storm added. "I will check downstairs and you check upstairs, got it?" Storm said. "OK!" Jack said.

This book has a story to how it was made. One day two BFFS were playing Minecraft (one was me and one was my BFF Kunchok). We made a Halloween parkour because it was almost Halloween. We made a short book in it to scare people and it was called... "An Evil Book." I thought that would be a good title for a chapter book and that's how this book came to be in real life!

"Run Jack!" Storm yelled as the book started to close in on him. "OK!" Jack shouted as he ran up the stairs and hid behind the living room couch. Then Storm popped up in front of him and he was a cat again. "How-" Jack started. "Magic" Storm cut Jack off. Storm was looking sad. "It's okay Storm, we will defeat the evil book another way." Jack said trying to cheer him up. Storm perked up. "Jack, you can defeat the book, I know you can!" Storm said. "I can?" said Jack in disbelief.

My name is Avery and I live in Canada. I have a great BFF named Kunchok and a nerdy brother named Colwyn. I love art, math, and reading. I also really like rock climbing. My favorite colours are: cyan\blue and my favorite shade is white. I could not have done this without my family, my library teacher Ms. Campbell, Kunchok, and my dog Finn.

"What was that?" Jack said out loud. He wanted to run. Jack knew that would be wrong. Jack went down the stairs and walked over to the bookshelf. That's when Jack saw the one book on the floor that somehow looked like it had creepy eyes. "What in the world?" Jack said. Terrified, he ran upstairs. Jack thought, I should text my parents. Again, deep in his mind he heard a voice say, "You're not a kid anymore." So Jack went back downstairs. He picked up the book and it started to glow! Jack ran upstairs with the book. That was a bad idea. "What now?" he questioned. He let go of the book in the middle of the living room and stepped away.

It was almost Halloween and 12 year old Jack was home alone when his night was taken over by an evil book! He really needed help. Could a magical cat save him? Will Jack ever defeat this villain? 

"Stop it! Stop it, you win!" the book finally conceded. "Really?" Storm said, not believing a word the evil book said. "Maybe..." the book said with a sneaky look in his eyes. "We don't trust you," Jack said jumping up and down on the book. "Good, because I will win!" the book declared while starting to glow. Startled, Jack jumped off the book and joined Storm behind the couch. "Can you make potions?" Jack whispered. "Yes!" Storm whispered back. "Ok, go to my room and make a sleeping potion," Jack said quietly. Storm went off running. "Where are you going kitty?" the book teased. "I guess it's just you and me kid," said the book.

Nothing. "The book is gone!" Storm said triumphantly. "YES" Jack yelled full of excitement. Click! Click! The front door unlocked all on its own. Minutes after, Jack's parents showed up. "Who is this?" Jacks mom asked staring at the cat. Jack smiled and replied, "My new friend" as he winked at Storm. "Time for bed" Jack's dad said. "Good night!" Jack said as he went upstairs with Storm following close behind. Jack didn't say anything about the book to his mom or dad... he didn't have to.

He just pushed it with everything he had. It budged an inch. Jack was already in pain and SO exhausted. He finally got it out of the closet and slowly started to climb the ladder. He was almost at the top when, "Hiss!" a cat popped out of nowhere. He was startled and almost fell but managed to grip the ladder and regain his balance. "What are you doing here?" the cat hissed. "Wha- you can talk?!" Jack asked. "Yeah, yeah," the cat said in a voice that sounded a little bit annoyed. "But what are you doing here?" "Trying to find a key, but I'm failing." Jack said. "I can help! My name is Storm" the cat said. "Thank you!" Jack replied.

When the book got to the last step Jack started to read. Instead the book didn't change, it was Storm who changed! "What? How am I a human?!" Storm said. "Ohhhh! I think I gave you the wrong spell." Jack said. "Then what is the spell to change the book?" Storm asked in a panicked voice. "I don't know." said Jack. Jack asked "What do we do now?" He started to run around everywhere. Storm started running in circles too. "I'm coming now!" the book said in a thundering voice. "I'm over here!" Storm said luring the book towards him.

I knew I wasn't supposed to" said Jack feeling guilty. "Don't worry....to change the book back to a regular everyday book, all you have to do is read a different book out loud." Storm said. "OK which book?" Jack asked. "Any!" Storm shouted. "Come on kid!" came a grumpy and mad voice from upstairs. "When it goes somewhere else, I will grab a different book." Storm explained. "I'm coming to your room kid!" said the book. "Now!" Jack whispered loudly. Storm ran upstairs to the bookshelf and grabbed a book and ran back down to Jack. "Is someone downstairs?" called the book. Jack knew the book was coming.

You won't believe what's happening! There is a really scary book in my house.

Really? Why should I believe you? Are you tired? I think you need to go to bed.

Just then.... beep! It was Jack's phone. There was a text from his dad.

Jack, grocery shopping went long and we are running a bit late.

Jack lied to his parents this one time.

"Where are you little kid?" They heard an ominous voice calling. They ran back to the basement door and locked it quickly behind them. "Phew, that was close!" Jack said. "I'm coming... you can't have a party without me!" the book said. "Hide!" Storm whispered. Suddenly the locked door flew open. How strong is the book's magic? they both wondered. Storm and Jack ran and hid and fortunately the book didn't see or hear them. "I will get you next time!" the book said. Jack and Storm stealthily checked EVERYWHERE for the key!

As his eyes were closed tight, Jack heard the book whisper, "Yes you are all alone with me." Tears were streaming down his cheek. Every second felt like it would never end. "Go away!" Jack said trying to sound calm and brave. "You can't run away from me! Give up and read me!" the book said with a determined voice.

"Uh..." said Storm. "Now would be the time to use it...do the best you can!" Jack said. "Ok!" Storm closed his eyes tightly and whispered "I can do this..." Magic came out of Storm's paws!! All the books started to vanish. "Awesome!" Jack said full of happy and hopeful thoughts. Sadly, this brief moment of relief got interrupted by the evil book. "Oh it's little kitty Storm and his magic paws! I'm so scared," the book said sarcastically. "Why is the evil book so hard to defeat?!" Storm said while pointing at the evil book. "Why didn't it disappear? Stay away!" Storm hissed at the book. "We need to go now!" shouted Storm. "Okay, but where?" Jack asked.

Chapter 1 Jack was placing the final blocks on the house he was building in Minecraft when… he heard a loud noise! He was home alone because his parents were out shopping for Halloween candy and decorations for tomorrow. His parents said they would be back at eight-o-clock, but it was only six. Jack was scared but he knew he wasn’t a little kid anymore. Jack was about to go to middle school so he had to start being brave. Jack ran out of his room and down the stairs terrified. Jack ran to the door and opened it, well at least tried to, but he was locked in! Now Jack was very scared. Windows, he thought. Jack tried all the windows but all were locked shut.

At the end of searching Jack and Storm had 17 keys. "Wow! So many keys! I hope there's no more!" Jack said. "Yeah but, do any of them work?" Storm asked. "I hope," Jack said. "This one..." BANG! "What was that?" Jack asked. "Hide!" Storm said. "We're coming kid" the book said. "Did the book say, "We're coming?" Jack feared. "But there's only one book." "Not anymore," Storm said. "Oh no!" Jack replied. Suddenly thousands of books came out of the basement door and poured into the living room. "Do you know any magic to get us out of this mess?" Jack asked Storm.

...nope.... the second key didn't work either. Ugh! What room to search next? Jack wondered. The living room! Behind the TV is a classic hiding spot. He was right. There was another key. "Yes!" He tried it.... nothing. Jack looked at the clock... only five more minutes! Jack started to get frantic. What if his parents come home to this? They will never trust him to be home alone again! Jack went to back his room and exhaled. Would his parents even know how to fix this if they came home now? Just then beep! It was was his phone. He got a text from his mom.

The book came closer. Jack started to run but the evil book squished his foot. Jack screamed so loud things fell. "AHHH! STOP SCREAMING!" the book yelled. Jack calmed down, but this was still war! At that moment, Storm came downstairs with a handful of bottles. Storm threw one at the book! It spilled all over the book and a drop fell on Jack's arm. "NO!" Storm yelled! Only Jack fell asleep...he was too close to the book. "Now I'm going to..." Storm fell asleep too! "Don't you know potions don't work on books" laughed the evil book. "Such noobs!"

There was one thing the book didn't know, Jack was immune to the sleeping potion and he was fake sleeping. "I got you now, kid!" Unexpectedly, Jack jumped up and punched the book as hard as he could. "Owww!" the book yelled. "Storm! Storm wake up!" yelled Jack. Then, out of options, Jack started to read the evil book. "NO!" Storm yelled as he woke up. Jack did not stop. The book grabbed Jack by the hair. Jack screamed so loud and spun around quickly sending the book flying into the bookshelf. The book exploded into very tiny pieces of paper. Jack and Storm looked at each other in shock.

It said Hi Jack! It will be another hour before we get back...we're just going to the grocery store. Jack replied "NP." Phew! I really needed more time, he thought and then walked down to the basement. He heard the book saying something, but he didn't care...he just ignored it. Jack went in the basement desperate to find the missing key. He looked up and noticed there was something shiny on the ceiling. "What is that?" Jack whispered to himself. Luckily, Jack was pretty tall... but not quite tall enough. A ladder...that’s what I need! Jack found the ladder in the closet, but it was heavy, VERY heavy.

He opened his door. There was nothing there. He looked up and down the hallway. Nothing moved except for Jack. Where was the book? he thought. So he closed the door. When he finished the evil book in Minecraft, Jack heard a second knock on his bedroom door. "Hello"? Jack whispered. "Come and read me kid!" the book said. Jack wanted to make the book stop, but how? He was too scared and once again when he opened the door, the evil book was nowhere to be found. Instead, Jack grabbed The Big Book of Spells from his bookshelf.

Jack felt badly, but he knew that this was his best option. How could he leave his own house like this? Storm needed help but the book was going to hear him if he called out. "Jack!" Storm yelled. "Meow, Meow, Meow!" The book was mocking Storm. Jack was so mad that the book was trying to hurt his new friend's feelings. "Meow, Meow, you can't stop me!" The book wouldn't quit taunting Storm. Jack was so angry that he ran and stomped on the book while he yelled, "I CAN STOP YOU AND I WILL BECAUSE I AM NOT AFRAID!"

Instead, he ran to his room. "OMG!" Bax said. "That was scary... was that real?" "Yes! Of course it's real! You think right before bedtime I would joke around? Well the answer is NO!" Jack yelled. "Whoa! I'm sorry, but now I'm going to have nightmares for the rest of my life," Bax said. "Anyway.. this is way to scary for my liking....uh bye!" Bax said quickly as she hung up. "Bye." Jack said defeated. He hung up too. Jack actually cried and yelled out loud, "Can anyone hear me or am I alone with this creepy book?!"

Chapter 2 "Go away!" Jack said again. "I can't!" the book said, as if he really needed an answer. "Just go away!" Jack said as he ran downstairs to the front door. Quickly he thought... key! I need to find the key to get out of this house! I'll look in the basement first, thought Jack. "Got my flashlight!" Jack whispered. Jack locked the basement door after him. "Hope that keeps the book out!" he said with a sigh. Jack started with the bookshelf. There was a tiny gap that Jack did not see. He checked the bathroom. There was never anything useful in the basement bathroom. He checked everywhere. After, he glanced at the book shelf one more time, but didn't see the old rusty key poking out of the tiny gap.

Jack sighed. Then went back upstairs. He wasn't afraid of the basement anymore. He was however, afraid of the book. He went to his mom and dad's room and.... found a key behind the bed!!!! Jack was so excited he ran downstairs and tried the key on the front door but.... nothing... it didn't work. What? The key must be for something else, but what? Jack wondered. He kept searching. First in the kitchen, where he saw something in the fruit bowl. "Another key!" Jack said as he got his hopes up and...

Surely there would be something in there that could help him. Slowly, the Big Book of Spells started to transform into the Evil Book! Jack jumped up and threw the book on the ground. He wanted to cry but he said to himself, "No... stay strong and be brave." He looked at the clock In the corner of his room. "One hour?" Jack said. Jack picked the book back up and threw it in the hallway. "Be gone!" he yelled. "You just don’t understand, kid" said the book. "Read me!" The book’s voice got higher. "It will free me!" "I don’t want to free you!" Jack yelled back. He shut his door and then texted his friend Bax.
