Welcome, to the "Walk of Remembrance" augmented reality journey.
I am Nalukhanyo, and together with my co-host, we are thrilled to take you on this extraordinary journey through the life of one of the world's most iconic leaders, Nelson Mandela.


Hello, my name is Imitha, and it is an absolute honor to have you with us on this immersive adventure. 
Today, we'll be delving into the remarkable life and legacy of Nelson Mandela, a man who not only transformed a nation but touched the hearts of people worldwide.


As we travel through this augmented reality timeline, we'll witness pivotal moments that shaped Mandela's journey—from his humble beginnings in Mvezo and Qunu, to his education at Fort Hare and Wits Universities.


We'll also explore his pivotal role as a young activist in Johannesburg, where the seed of resistance against apartheid was sown.


Our walk will lead us through the hardships he endured during his unjust imprisonment on Robben Island, and his unwavering commitment to peace and reconciliation as he rose to become South Africa's first black president.


We'll also  witness the birth of a new democratic South Africa at the Union Buildings in Pretoria when Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as president.


So, fasten your seatbelts, for this awe-inspiring journey of courage, resilience, and the triumph of the human spirit.

We play the role of iimbongi (Xhosa praise poets) in our project.  Nelson Mandela was a Xhosa man who came from the Eastern Cape, not too far from where we live.  We felt that it was important to honour him in the traditional way of the Xhosa people.  Our umbongo (poem), is spoken in Xhosa and has an English translation available for those that do not understand...

This is the Walk of Remembrance Timeline seen without the help of the iPad and the Reality Composer app…

Reality Composer allows us to create engaging and interactive projects with interactive elements, images, sounds and 3D models with this we

are able to create a timeline of someone's life that incorporates augmented reality.

Keynote: The planning phase of the project was done using Keynote. Images were taken from the internet and other important facts and dates were added to the Keynote presentation. Canva: Videos and images were created and edited mainly using Canva. Reality Composer: The timeline was made more interactive and augmented using the Reality Composer app (*Unfortunately, we discovered that it is not possible to export and save an entire Reality Composer project with multiple scenes - our goal was to share the project so that all may enjoy the "Walk of Remembrance" Timeline. *) Google Earth: A Google Earth Project was created to make the places of interest in Nelson Mandela's life more interesting and engaging. Padlet: The important images and Reality Composer project have been saved and shared via Padlet - this is to ensure that people from all over the world are able to create their own version of the Timeline. YouTube: Videos of Nelson Mandela's famous speeches were found on YouTube, we used a <a href="https://savemp3.net/id3/">downloader</a> to isolate essential parts of these speeches and downloaded them as MP3s (which we used in Reality Composer). Google Arts &amp; Culture: Additional resources and information were found using the Google Arts &amp; Culture app. QR Monkey: We used QR Monkey to create the various QR codes used throughout the project. Media Converter: We needed to use the Media Converter app to convert our voice notes to Mp3 format so that the Adobe Podcast program could enhance them. Voice Memos: Many of the voice notes done in the project were made using the Voice Memos app.

A Google Earth Project was also created. Google Earth projects take us on virtual tours around the world and in particular places that were important

in Nelson Mandela's Journey. This tool is an invaluable tool that allows us a deeper look into the life of Nelson Mandela. These were the villages Nelson Mandela
