What does it mean to be truly hungry?

In the United states one in six people struggles with hunger.

When you are hungry you can not sleep. You do not have any energy so its hard to walk. And you can not walk to get food.

Some people have malnutrition, it is the lack of nutrients needed to grow and stay healthy. It's not like when you don't eat snack or breakfast and you are a little hungry. It's big like when you don't eat for weeks. It's bad.

What does it mean to be truly hungry?

"Sometimes I'd sleep without eating. It's very difficult and I don't like it. You spend the night hungry and in the morning it's worse." -Ending Poverty and Hunger by Judith Anderson with Christian Aid.

When you are truly hungry it is not like you just have not had a snack, it is like you have not eaten in a week. If people don't eat they will die. This is called starvation.

Sometimes people have some food but not enough food to feel full or to be healthy. For example, if you have a steady diet of hotdogs you would not be getting enough nutrients to be heathy. This is called malnutrition.

People who live in poverty are often hungry.
Children are hungry. Every six seconds a child dies from hunger.

One out of nine people are hungry.

Why are children hungry?

Natural disasters destroy jobs or crops so people can't get money for food.
Tornadoes and Earthquakes are the most dangerous natural disasters. They destroy everything in their paths. They can destroy farms, homes, stores, and crops.
Droughts can dry up water to water the crops.

Poor people do not have money to buy food. Poverty is the main reason people are hungry.

Wars can destroy farms houses and stores too. They are bad things that are happening in our world.

Fires can burn many things like houses, crops, farms, and animals that give you food.

What happens to your body when you are truly hungry?

If you are hungry your bones break easily
and you feel...
-Sick
-Tired
-Dizzy
and you have ...
-Weak muscles
-Bleeding gums
-Dry skin
And you are more likely to get sick and die.

Lots of people are so hungry that they have big bellies full of gas.

This person is so hungry that he can't move.

Kids can get so hungry and get so sick that they have to go to the doctor.

What happens to your body when you are truly hungry?

This is a little boy named Pierre and he is in his bed with a bloated stomach because he has gas in his stomach.

Here are examples of things you can get when you are hungry.

*tired
*bleeding gums
*dizzy
*decaying teeth
*weak muscles
*bones break easily
*bloated stomach

How does being hungry affect your thinking and learning?

If you don't have a lot of food then your muscles will be weak and you can't even move or sit up straight. Someone will have to put you up and someone will have to move you to different spot.

When you are hungry you lack energy so you can't learn or think. If you are hungry you will have trouble concentrating and no energy to think. When you are growing you need to eat otherwise it will be way harder to learn.

How does being hungry affect your thinking and learning?

When people are hungry these are the effects on their thinking and learning:
-Can't concentrate
-Difficult to learn
- Hard to think
- Lack energy to work
- Body and brain can't function
- Focusing on feeling hungry and not focusing on learning
- Can't go to school

This kid is tired and he can't concentrate because he is hungry.

People all around the world are hungry, maybe even your next door neighbor. What do you think it's like to be hungry and unable to concentrate?

How do organizations and the people in them help hungry people?

Feed My Starving Children packs Mana Pack and sends it to the hungry places on earth. Feed My Starving Children helps people a lot. Feed My Starving Children made a kid walk when he couldn't before. They help people who are starving to death.

No Kid Hungry is a great website! You can give money there to provide school breakfast and summer meals for hungry kids! Kids who rely on school meals can be hungry in the summer when school is out. This program gives information about hungry people and how you can help. No Kid Hungry teaches how to shop smarter and cook healthier. "1 in 5 kids in America know what it's like to come with empty cupboards."

*Cupboards =Where food can be stored. Also means pantry.
*Mana Pack =food packed at Feed My Starving Children that has....Vitamins, veggies, soy, and rice that is given to the hungry people.
