It is important to remember that the PLACE of a digit determines the VALUE of that digit especially when you have a number with the same digit in two different places.&#160;Understanding how a digit&#8217;s value is determined by where it is placed in a numeral will be very useful for you. Being able to see how the value of spaces on the place value chart relate to each other will help you become a better mathematician.

&#160;&#160;&#160;Understanding relationships between digits and their place value is very important when working with numerals. The value of a digit changes as it moves up on the place value chart. Base ten blocks and a place value charts help us see the relationship between where digits are placed on the chart and their value in the spot. In this book, you will work on recognizing that in a multi digit whole number&#160; (less than or equal to 1,000,000),&#160; a digit in one place represents 10 times&#160; as much as it represents in the place to its right.&#160; For example, you will be able to recognize that 7 in 700 is 10 times&#160; bigger than the 7 in 70 because 700 &#247; 70 = 10&#160; and 70 x 10 = 700.
