The game of soccer is a team sport where two groups of 11 players face off on a grass or artificial turf field to attempt to score a greater number of goals than the other team. The two teams try to perform foot skills that will get past the other team's defenses and goalie to score. Different formations can be taken on in order to maximize chances of success. Team spirit on and off the field is a crucial part of the game, and coaches stress the importance of proper sportsmanship.

The game was transformed into a formal sport in England in the 1800s. The FIFA World Cup is a soccer event where various countries compete in soccer matches. The event is hosted by a different country each time it takes place. The first official FIFA World Cup was hosted by Uruguay in 1930. This competition also took place in 1934 and 1938, and has now occurred every 4 years since 1950.

People Associated with Soccer

Soccer is a team sport where many different people unite to make the game run smoothly. The players compete until the very end of the match, which makes the game enjoyable for both themselves and the 'fans'. However, these players are given prior instruction on what to do and what not to do along with formations by their coaches. The referees are an important part of the game as well, for they acknowledge penalties and watch the game carefully to ensure that everything is under control.

The players who participate in soccer wear cleats to make the ball maneuver with more control than with regular sneakers. The shin guards are needed to protect your shins with the ball or cleats that may come in contact with them. The ball itself is a vital piece of equipment that is composed of pentagons and hexagons, and the players move the ball using their cleat-bound feet in a controlled way, known as dribbling. The goal is also used in soccer. The goal is protected by a single goalie (or keeper), and the way to score is by inserting, or 'shooting', the ball into the goal.

Positions

In soccer, the main goal that the team is attempting to achieve is to score more goals than the other team and win the game, however every position has its own goals to contribute to the team as a whole. The strikers (forwards) are trying to score the goals that the team needs to win. The midfielders also often attempt to score, but they also contribute on the defensive side of the field. The defenders work almost exclusively in the back, and try to prevent the opposing team from reaching the goalie head-on. The goalie's job is to prevent the ball from entering the goal.

The field can give extra depth to the game. The team captains get a potential opportunity to choose which side of the field they would like to take first. If the field is downhill, then your team may want to take that side right away and put some goals on the board, and if one side of the field has the sun shining harshly, then your team can take that side when the sun is lower. The field could be grass or made of artificial turf, however, the ball tends to roll faster on artificial turf.

Rules

In the game of soccer, there are many rules and regulations to follow. Arguably, the most important rule of the game is that no hands (or arms) may touch the soccer ball, with the exception of the goalie, or a free kick will be given to the opposing team. Another crucial rule is the offsides rule. If a player from one team is closer to the opposing team's goalie and goal than any of the opposing team's defenders, and someone passes to them, then that is an offsides play, and the opposing team is given a free kick. If a player participates in unsportsmanlike conduct during a game, they may recieve a yellow card. The yellow card represents a warning, one yellow card is a two-minute penalty, and two yellow cards result in a red card.

If a player receives a red card, then they are ejected from the game and may not be replaced for the remainder for that game. A suspension is automatically given to anyone who is given a red card. There is one more, slightly obscure card, known as the blue card. If a player is given a blue card, they face the same penalty as a yellow card, however two blue cards do not result in a red card.
