The Peer Educator course is the first of the four year Peer Education Program at the high school. This special class helps students transition from middle school to high school more easily. Students are extensively trained in communication and leadership skills. They will have the opportunity to teach lessons, to be a peer mentor and will be asked to help lead their grade in school activities. Students must complete a Peer Educators application form, have three teacher recommendations, and be interviewed for the class at the end of their eighth grade year.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION, ATHLETICS, AND RECREATION DEPARTMENT

To meet the needs and interests of the student body, a variety of courses are offered.&#160;Classes consist of co-educational activities geared to all skill levels. All physical education courses meet on alternate days for a full year except dance classes which meet daily. All pupils registered in the schools of New York State are required by NYS Education Law to attend classes of instruction in physical education.&#160;One course must be taken in each of the grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 to earn the two credits required for graduation. An adaptive program will be offered for students with I.E.P.&#8217;s. Failure of any course (9, 10, 11 and 12) mandates repeating Physical Education during summer school or the next school year.&#160;&#160; All 9th and 10th grade students must enroll in General Physical Education, Dance, Aquatics or Advanced Aquatics. Each 11th and 12th grade student must choose an elective AND an alternate course in case his/her first choice cannot be scheduled.&#160;No request for change in a Physical Education course will be accepted if a student has been successfully scheduled for either his/her first choice or alternate.

HOW CAN PARENTS PREPARE THEIR CHILD WITH A DISABILITY WITH THE TRANSITION FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL? There are steps families can take towards the independence needed for high school, postsecondary education, and employment. As children enter high school and prepare for college and beyond, there is an increased expectation that they will be able to manage and complete their schoolwork independently. This can be a challenging transition for some families. Here are some steps you and your family can take:

PREPARING FOR HIGH SCHOOL Determine what skills and activities your child is motivated to do independently. &#183; Ask your child, &#8220;Are there activities at school or at home that your teachers or I help you with that you wish you could do by yourself?&#8221; Think ahead to high school and beyond and consider skills your child needs to learn. &#183; Ask yourself these questions, &#8220;When is my child is preparing for high school and later for postsecondary education, what are the activities he or she will need to do independently? What skills will s/he need to do those activities successfully?&#8221; Encourage your child to take greater ownership in their IEP and assure them you are there to support them. &#183; Your child&#8217;s independence and involvement in their own education is guided by your parental support and encouragement. It is important that your child find their own voice when it comes to advocating for their needs. &#183; Explain to your child what an IEP is and why they have one. &#183; Help your child visualize the future and explain why building their independence now will help later on. &#183; Encourage your child to articulate their modifications and accommodations to their teachers. &#183; Encourage your child to attend their IEP meetings.

CPR Junior and senior students will complete training in adult/child CPR and first aid.&#160;They may receive certification upon successful completion of this unit of study. This class will receive instruction for a period of ten (10) days, and this training will be part of their regular physical education class.&#160;Cost for certification card is $25.00.

WELLNESS&#160; The Wellness Education Program is a portion of the General Physical Education curriculum that teaches students healthy lifestyle habits.&#160;Students learn nutrition, stress management, communication skills, coping skills and how the choices they make affect lifestyle diseases. Students will receive five weeks of instruction in the fall and five weeks in the spring dealing with the following topics: nutrition,&#160;stress management,&#160;coping skills, communication skills, body image,&#160;peer pressure issues, HIV/AIDS,&#160;drug and alcohol prevention, CPR,&#160;cyberbullying, relaxation techniques,&#160;and mental health.

WHICH COURSES MEET THE 1 CREDIT GRADUATION REQUIREMENT? There is a graduation requirement of one credit in one of The Arts. To fulfill that requirement through the Art Department a student must take either Studio in Art for one credit, or any two of the following half credit courses: Foundations in Art I, Foundations in Art 2, Crafts, Computer Art, Digital Photography, Photo 1, or Art History. The half credit courses do not need to be taken in the same year. This same combination of courses is also one of the requirements for Graduation Honors in Art. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN STUDIO IN ART AND FOUNDATIONS 1 AND 2? The combination of Foundations in Art 1 and 2 (half credit each) are equal in content to Studio in Art (one full credit). Depending on their priorities, students may only be able to fit a half credit of art into their schedule at a given time. Studio in Art is an introductory course that will prepare students for many of our more advanced courses. In Foundations in Art 1, students will primarily create two-dimensional work and in Foundations in Art 2, students will focus on three-dimensional work. The Foundations courses can be taken in any order. The curricula of both Foundations courses are equal to the one Studio in Art course. AM I ABLE TO TAKE BOTH MUSIC AND ART IN THE SAME YEAR? Yes, and many students do. Creating a high school schedule is all about establishing priorities. Students often find that they cannot take everything they want to take, so they must prioritize. Taking a full-credit course in both music and art is difficult in 9th grade, but not impossible. It becomes easier as students move to higher grades. The Art Department offers many half-credit courses that are easier to combined with a full credit in music. ARE THERE ANY COURSES WITH PREREQUISITES? Yes, most of the more advanced art courses require skill sets that are established in previous courses. For example, Painting has a prerequisite of either Studio in Art or Foundations 1 and 2. The reason for this is that students will not only learn the basics of painting in the preliminary courses, but they will also develop a deep understanding for the elements of art and the principles of design which are necessary for success in the painting class. ARE THERE ART CLUBS? Yes, there are several art clubs. They include: Mural Club, Photo Club, Olympics of the Visual Arts, Yearbook Club, Stage Construction Club and National Art Honor Society. WHAT IS THE NATIONAL ART HONOR SOCIETY? National Art Honor Society is a recognized national honor society overseen by the National Art Education Association. Students in National Art Honor Society participate in school, local and global community service through the visual arts. Students must be enrolled in a visual arts art course each year of membership, and earn the yearly required points/credit towards annual induction and senior graduation cords.

SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT

NEW YORK STATE SOCIAL STUDIES REQUIREMENTS

All students in Syosset High School are required to successfully complete four years of social studies for graduation - one in each grade, 9 through 12.&#160;In grades 9, 10, and 11 alternate paths are provided via Regents level and A.P. groupings. Placement is reviewed periodically, and students are reassigned when appropriate.&#160;All students must pass the New York State Regents examination on completion of their sophomore and junior year programs.

9th GRADE COURSE OPTIONS

GLOBAL HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY ENRICHMENT &#8226; Focuses on a chronological approach to World History from the dawn of civilization to the French Revolution (1789). Political, economic, religious, social, and intellectual developments will be studied in each period. &#8226; Emphasis will be placed on social studies skill development relative to the Regents examination taken in June of 10th grade. AP WORLD HISTORY (2 YEAR COURSE) &#8226; This course offers a two year sequence. The first half [9th grade] will focus on the Foundations Period (8000 B.C.E. to 600 C.E.) up to the Age of Exploration (1450-1750). &#8226; Emphasis will be placed on social studies skill development relative to the Regents and AP examinations. &#8226; This course prepares students to take the AP World History: Modern Exam in May of 10th Grade and the Global History &#38; Geography Exam in June of 10th grade. AP WORLD HISTORY (1 YEAR COURSE) &#8226; This course will devote considerable focus on critical evaluation of primary and secondary sources, oral presentations, simulations, and the development and interpretation of document-based questions as they relate to world history. Connections between regions and throughout history are stressed to enhance students' understanding of the factors that shape our world and human history. All students will be expected to take the AP Examination in May. &#8226; Prospective students should have a passion for history and the ability to do much of the work on their own. This is a demanding course that requires dedication, and strong reading and critical thinking skills. &#8226; This course prepares students to take the AP World History: Modern Exam in May of 9th grade and the Global History &#38; Geography Exam in June of 10th grade. * Students with an interest in history, social science, and/or politics may also wish to consider joining our award-winning Model UN, Model Congress, or Mock Trial teams.

HOW IS GEOMETRY HONORS DIFFERENT? &#8226; Curriculum expectations are beyond the NYS Regents, and problems are more advanced. &#8226; Instruction is steeped in theory. Students are expected to understand how a geometric construction produces a given result vs. applying the construction. &#8226; Assessments are more rigorous than Regents and Lab courses. Geometry: Students are asked to reflect over lines that are either horizontal, vertical, or over the lines y = x and y = -x. Students will need to know the rules of reflecting over different lines. Example: Plot triangle ABC with vertices&#160; A (1, 3), B (2, 8) and C (4, 6). Plot triangle A&#8217;B&#8217;C&#8217;, the image of ABC after a reflection through y = x and list the new coordinates. Geometry Honors: Students are asked to reflect over any line (including oblique lines). Students will need to use prior knowledge that includes: 1. Writing the equation of a perpendicular line through a point not on the line. 2. Finding the intersection of 2 lines. 3. Using the midpoint formula to find the missing coordinate. Example: Reflect the point A(4, 3) across the line y = -2x &#8211; 5. GEOMETRY HONORS PLACEMENT INDICATORS &#8226; At least a 95% test average&#160; &#8226; At least a 90% Algebra 1 Regents exam score&#160; &#8226; Enjoyment of mathematics &#8226; Perseverance on challenging problems

GEOMETRY LAB PLACEMENT INDICATORS &#8226; Current placement in Math Workshop &#8226; Less than a B test average&#160; &#8226; Less than an 80% Algebra 1 Regents exam score ALGEBRA 1 Students who studied Math 8 in the eighth grade will continue their math study in Algebra 1; this is the first of three math courses students complete to earn an Advanced Regents Diploma.&#160;This is offered as a single period per day course and also with a workshop period for additional support. MATH RESEARCH A 3-year sequence in mathematics research is available.&#160;Math researchers are expected to prepare work for the following venues: &#8226; Long Island Math Fair &#8226; Long Island Science and Engineering Fair &#8226; Regeneron Science Talent Search COMPUTER SCIENCE All students interested in computer science begin by taking Introduction to Computer Programming, which does not require any prerequisites. Then students can choose to continue their studies through the programming path or the robotics path.

ENGLISH/COMMUNICATION ARTS DEPARTMENT

The English Department courses develop the students&#8217; ability to read, write, speak and think critically and introspectively. By examining and responding to various genres, students deepen their insights about human nature, society and themselves through the study of drama, poetry, novels, short stories, and non-fiction. The courses in the Communication Arts Program allow students to explore both the practical and theoretical aspects of communication. The Communication Arts Program is recommended for all students in grades 9 through 12 who are interested in film, entertainment, broadcast journalism, broadcast and non-broadcast television, broadcast or communications management, and broadcast engineering.&#160;

THEATRE ARTS AND DANCE PROGRAM

The courses and performance opportunities offered by the Theatre Arts Program are designed to meet the needs, interests, and talents of high school students interested in theatre and dance. Although intended to introduce students to skills and techniques they will need to pursue a possible career in these disciplines, these courses present ALL students the opportunities to develop self-expression and appreciation through participation in the various theatrical productions. Enrollment in performance-based Theatre Arts courses will fulfill the arts distribution requirements for graduation.

LIBRARY LEARNING COMMONS

The nationally recognized Library Learning Commons with award-winning faculty is truly the hub of Syosset High School. The program actually includes three unique spaces for students (Main Library, Pilot Classroom, and Innovation Lab), as well as a space for teacher collaboration (TAC Center). A new feature will be a Genius Bar for Acer-certified students to serve as mentors for their peers to provide hardware and software support. All students are welcome to visit the library during their lunch, free periods, and after school until 5:30 to explore the digital and print resources, collaborate with their peers, and to find a quiet place for independent study.

The Syosset High School Technology Department program of instruction is designed to provide girls and boys with a wide variety of opportunities to experience technical content and problem solving using hands-on activities in our state of the art technology laboratories.&#160;Technology course work enables students to focus their interests and talents while exploring future career choices. Technology courses are an excellent introduction for girls and boys to discover careers in engineering and architecture. Advanced coursework is offered in architecture, automotive, engineering and nanotechnology. Contact members of the Technology Department, guidance counselors and/or the Career and Technical Education coordinator for additional information on this exciting group of electives.&#160;&#160;Students interested in an Advanced Regents Diploma may choose to complete a five unit sequence option in Technology.

The Science Department offers courses to meet the needs of students at all levels. In every course, students are encouraged to think for themselves and apply scientific methods to the solution of problems. Learning is accomplished through the use of a wide variety of laboratory and classroom experiences. The courses offered in the department are designed to provide students with an appreciation for Science in the real world.

The Human Ecology Department uses an interdisciplinary approach to examine how we live and the things we do as people.&#160; Human Ecology classes provide a unique opportunity to explore real-world topics such as child care and development, teacher education, nutrition, lifespan studies and psychology. Classes are also offered that allow students to study and apply skills within the realms of culinary arts, interior design, and clothing construction. Student creativity, self-expression, and introspection, are fostered along with the development of practical life-skills.

WHICH ENGLISH CLASS MUST 9TH GRADERS TAKE? All 9th grade students must take&#160;either&#160;English 9 Enriched or English 9 Honors.&#160; WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ENGLISH 9 ENRICHED AND ENGLISH 9 HONORS? Both 9 Enriched and 9 Honors courses are aligned with the NYS Next Gen standards. Both courses prepare students for the rigors of high school academic reading and writing in their English classes and across content areas.&#160;9 Honors moves at a faster pace and offers more complex texts than English 9 Enriched.&#160; WHICH ENGLISH AND/OR COMMUNICATION ARTS ELECTIVES MAY 9TH GRADERS TAKE? INTRODUCTION TO RADIO - The course is designed to give students an understanding and appreciation of radio broadcasting and theory, as well as practical hands-on experience. Students work on the development of interviewing skills, radio/media copy writing, and audio production techniques. Students write and produce various programs, newscasts, weather reports, special features, PSAs and other broadcast materials. Exemplary projects are broadcast on WKWZ, the district&#8217;s FM radio station. RADIO INTERNSHIP -&#160;Students work at various jobs in WKWZ. Student positions include Station Manager, Program Director, Production Manager, Public Service Director, Sports Director, News Director, and Business Manager. This program gives the student vital real-life experience in the day-to-day operations of an FCC licensed broadcast radio station. INTRODUCTION TO VIDEO PRODUCTION -&#160;The main objective of this course is to learn scriptwriting, shooting techniques, editing, lighting, and sound. Instruction is project oriented. Students will produce videos based upon scripts they write in class. JOURNALISM -&#160;Journalism emphasizes the basics of print and electronic journalism. Included are the understanding, gathering, writing, and editing of news features and editorials. Other areas include journalism ethics, press law, rights and responsibilities of student press and propaganda. Students are encouraged to submit finished pieces to the school newspaper,&#160;The Pulse. NEWS PRODUCTION - Video production students experience producing an authentic daily news broadcast for Syosset High School. The main goal of the course is to convey real news items to the school community while learning the interpersonal, technical and journalistic skills and strategies needed to create a daily digital broadcast for an authentic audience. Students will develop informational, persuasive and narrative writing skills, expressive and interactive language skills, computer-generated design strategies, and digital editing expertise. Students will also create specialized video projects and features for the morning news program.&#160; PUBLIC SPEAKING - This course is designed to help students become more effective, confident communicators, both as speakers and listeners. Assignments include the delivery of impromptu, informative, and persuasive speeches as well as storytelling, interviews, debates, and other interactive work. The aim of this course is to develop communication skills that contribute positively to each student&#8217;s personal development as a public speaker.&#160;

For all courses culminating in a Regents examination, satisfactory laboratory reports for 1200 minutes of laboratory experience is required (1) for entrance into the Regents examination, (2) to pass the course, and/or (3) to retake the course in summer school.&#160;In addition, laboratory reports must be completed and submitted within the time period determined by the subject teacher but in no case more than 15 school days after the completion of the laboratory work.&#160;A minimum of 70% of the labs must be completed each marking period to receive a passing grade for the marking period. *Advanced Research in the sciences is available through the Advanced Research Program. WHAT ARE THE COURSE OPTIONS FOR 9TH GRADE? Students currently taking Earth Science can either take Living Environment or Honors Biology with Research 1. Students taking Science 8 will take Earth Science in 9th grade. WHAT IS THE DIFFEENCE BETWEEN LIVING ENVIRONMENT/BIOLOGY AND BIOLOGY HONORS? Living Environment is a course designed to give students a comprehensive overview of high school biology and prepares students for the Regents in Living Environment. Biology Honors is both an accelerated and advanced course. The pace is fast and the students are expected to learn material in much greater depth. In addition to taking the Living Environment Regents, students are also prepared for the SAT II in Biology. &#160; WHAT IS RESEARCH 1? Students who take Honors Biology must also take Research 1. This course meets every other day, with the Honors Biology lab meeting the other days in the cycle. Research 1 is comprised of science, social science and technology research. Students are prepared to pursue different kinds of research and to use various tools for data collection and design. &#160; IF A STUDENT DOES NOT TAKE HONORS WILL THEY BE AT A DISADVANTAGE FOR FUTURE COURSE WORK? Absolutely not! Students in Living Environment or Earth Science are still able to take Physics, as well as any of our AP courses.

WORLD LANGUAGES DEPARTMENT

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS FOR STUDYING WORLD LANGUAGE IN 9TH GRADE, IF I AM DOING WELL IN MIDDLE SCHOOL WORLD LANGUAGE? Since learning a language requires many years of study, most students continue learning the same language all the way through 12th grade.&#160;This is the best option for building language proficiency.&#160;In addition to Chinese, French, Italian and Spanish, we offer American Sign Language (ASL), Japanese, Korean, Latin and Russian at the high school.&#160;In fact, many Syosset High School students study two (and sometimes even three!) languages at the same time.&#160;You can do this as a 9th grader, if you have time in your schedule.&#160; WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS IF I HAVE NOT BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN MIDDLE SCHOOL WORLD LANGUAGE? One option for students who struggle in world language is Exploring Latin, a course that includes learning about mythology, vocabulary study, and other literacy skills.&#160;Another option may be to take a level one course in&#160;ASL, Japanese, Latin, Korean, or Russian. Switching from French, Italian or Spanish to a different language&#160;should be discussed with your guidance counselor or the World Language Coordinator.&#160;Take advantage of this opportunity to learn a language that interests you! WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BETWEEN HONORS AND REGULAR LEVEL? Learning to communicate in the target language is the goal in both honors and regular.&#160;Honors classes are a good fit for students who have a special interest in language learning.&#160;The pace is fast.&#160;The honors curriculum covers double the amount of material compared to the regular class.&#160;Because of the fast pace, teachers do not spend a lot of class time reviewing.&#160;Rather, honors students should expect to spend time studying and preparing for class independently.&#160;Honors level classes are weighted slightly higher in GPA calculations.&#160;In regular classes teachers spend more time on each topic, which gives students more time to absorb and practice what they are learning.&#160;Expect your language skills to get stronger, whatever the level! HOW MUCH HOMEWORK DOES EACH CLASS GET? Learning a language requires effort, and doing work outside of class time is a part of that.&#160;Homework should be expected in both honors and regular level classes. CAN 9TH GRADE STUDENTS SWITCH FROM HONORS TO REGULAR CLASSES, AND VICE VERSA? Generally, students stay at the same level throughout high school.&#160;You can reach high proficiency levels in both programs by working hard and continuing to study your language through to 12th grade.&#160;Some students who have been in regular-level classes take SUPA, a college-level class, in 12th grade.&#160;Your world language class should challenge you, but feel doable.&#160;It may be possible to switch from honors to regular (and vice versa).&#160;If you feel out of place, speak with your teacher and ask what they recommend.&#160;Your teachers care about you and want you to be successful.&#160;They know you well, and know our program, so it&#8217;s best to follow their recommendation. HOW MANY CREDITS IN WORLD LANGUAGE DO STUDENTS NEED TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL? Most students in Syosset go beyond the minimum New York State graduation requirements and study World Language for all four years of high school.&#160;&#160; World Language graduation requirements are: Regents Diploma:&#160;1 credit,&#160;plus pass a Checkpoint A Exam Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation:&#160;3 credits, plus pass a Checkpoint B Exam WHAT TYPES OF ASSESSMENTS DOES EACH CLASS DO? Assessments are similar to those you experienced in middle school.&#160;This includes integrated performance assessments, quizzes and tests, writing assignments, speaking activities, and reading. Language learning is cumulative, meaning each step forward depends on what you&#8217;ve learned before, so the level of difficulty increases a little bit at a time. WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF TAKING HONORS? Honors students reach high levels of proficiency over the years.&#160;The honors courses culminate in a college-level course in 12th grade, which gives students an opportunity to challenge themselves further.&#160;The honors courses also lead to the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, a special designation placed on students&#8217; diplomas to recognize their language skills.&#160;Additionally, more competitive colleges and universities look favorably on students taking the most challenging classes possible. WILL I BE REQUIRED TO SPEAK IN THE TARGET LANGUAGE? Of course!&#160;The only way to learn how to speak a language is by doing it.&#160;In all world language classes expect to spend a great deal of time speaking the language.&#160;Our goal is that all classes be conducted at least 90% in the target language.&#160;The more the language is used in class, the more you will learn.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES Special Education refers to programs and/or services that are specially designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities. The Committee on Special Education (CSE) determines the programs and/or services for each student with a disability.&#160;Services are provided within the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) as defined in a student&#8217;s Individualized Education Program (IEP) as determined by the CSE. CONTINUUM OF SERVICES The continuum of special education services for school-age students with disabilities is an array of services to meet an individual student&#8217;s needs that may include the following: RELATED SERVICES&#160;-&#160;includes counseling, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and services for the deaf and hard of hearing or visually impaired.&#160;Services may include consultation and/or direct services. CONSULTANT TEACHER SERVICES (CTS)&#160;&#8211;&#160;&#160;Direct or Indirect services that provide consultant teacher services to students with disabilities depending upon the needs of the student and as per IEP. RESOURCE ROOM (5:1)&#160;&#8211;&#160;Purpose is to provide supplemental instruction of students with disabilities who are in need of such supplemental programs. SPECIAL CLASS&#160;&#8211; A student with a disability shall be placed in a special class for instruction on a daily basis to the extent indicated in the student&#8217;s IEP. The class size for those students whose special education needs consist primarily of the need for specialized instruction in a setting of 15:1, 12:1, and 12:1:1.

The Syosset High School Business Department program of instruction is designed to offer students the opportunity to explore career options and develop computer skills. The Syosset High School business program is a &#8220;mini-university&#8221; where students may earn up to 33 college credits before graduating from high school. Business students are introduced to careers in law, management, marketing, real estate, finance and accounting. Successful real estate students will receive a certificate qualifying them to sit for the NYS Real Estate Sales Associate Licensing Examination. The social studies graduation economics requirement may be fulfilled by taking the College Business Economics course. &#160; DECA, Investment Club and Young Entrepreneurs Club are our award-winning business clubs and students are encouraged to participate. Our Cooperative Work Experience and Internship programs offer students employment opportunities in school and within the local business community. In addition to the traditional performance courses, the Music Department offers some other very interesting courses. Students interested in careers in the music industry might consider taking Commercial Music. We offer a course for students who want to learn more about recording technology called Recording for Musicians. Music students who want to think and perform more creatively might enjoy Improvisation. Finally, students interested in popular music might like to take a new course called Rock History and Performance. This course is open to all instrumentalists and vocalists. While daily practicing is not a requirement of the courses, regular practicing is necessary if you are going to improve your musical performance skills. We know that students often have a lot of homework. We hope that taking a break to practice will serve to release some of the tension caused by homework, but we understand that many students will not be able to practice every night.

WHY DO ENSEMBLE CLASSES AT THE HIGH SCHOOL MEET EVERY DAY? At the high school we take music performance to the next level. If you have ever heard any of the high school groups, you know how incredible they are. Achieving this level of performance requires daily rehearsal and this higher level of dedication and commitment. HOW ARE LESSONS GIVEN AT THE HIGH SCHOOL? Rotating lessons are a very important part of the high school music program and are very similar to the elementary and middle school lesson programs. Lessons rotate throughout the school day so that students will never be asked to miss any one period more than two times in a given marking period. While we cannot entertain requests to &#8220;never miss&#8221; a given class, our teachers are understanding of the workload in some classes and they can be flexible. The key to success is for the student to be a good communicator. Lesson attendance is factored into the grade for each course. Not showing up without explanation will always count against a student&#8217;s grade, but letting the teacher know of a conflict in advance and arranging for a make-up goes a long way to demonstrate a student&#8217;s commitment to their music class. SINCE LESSONS ARE GIVEN IN SCHOOL, DO I NEED PRIVATE LESSONS AS WELL? Private lessons are never required. Students who wish to explore their musical potential often benefit from working with a private teacher that is a specialist on their instrument or voice part. Our music teachers have names of private teachers. IF I AM IN BAND, DO I NEED TO PARTICIPATE IN MARCHING BAND? Marching Band/Pep Band is a very minimal commitment at Syosset High School for students in our 10th-12th grade bands. Those students are asked to support our school and community by performing with the band at four home football games and in the Memorial Day Parade. This is not a requirement for 9th graders in band. AM I ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN A CLUB SUCH AS ADELETTES OR JAZZ BAND IF I AM NOT ENROLLED IN A MUSIC CLASS? Preference for the co-curricular performing ensembles will always be given to students enrolled in the curricular music classes. IS THERE A MUSIC HONOR SOCIETY? Yes, Syosset High School has a chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society which has twice been recognized as the National Chapter of the Year! Students must be enrolled in a music class to join. Tri-M does a great deal of service to the school and community through music. Students are inducted based upon receiving points for participating in Tri-M activities and must be enrolled in a music class in order to participate. WHO SHOULD TAKE MUSIC THEORY? Any student serious about music should study music theory. We offer two levels of Music Theory, and these courses are very highly recommended for students who are thinking about majoring or minoring in music in college. Music Theory is one of the requirements for Graduation Honors in Music. This course is not typically taken in 9th Grade.

A significant requirement of the various performance-based classes is that students participate in some capacity with the theatrical productions offered by the program each semester. Any student who plans to specialize in Theatre Arts Performance or Theatre Arts Education (either Drama or Dance) is encouraged to participate extensively in the many theatrical productions offered by the program.

COURSES RECOMMENDED FOR INCOMING 9TH GRADERS ACTING I &#8211; This course offers students an introduction into the craft of acting by examining the various aspects of interpretation, acting and play production. Although students register for each course separately, it is highly recommended they take these courses consecutively. DANCE I &#8211; This introductory dance class is for students with little or no exposure to dance. The main focus of this year-long course is jazz and tap. This course also fulfills the PE requirement for the year. PUBLIC SPEAKING &#8211; This course is designed to help students become more comfortable and effective as both speakers and listeners. Assignments include the delivery of impromptu, informative and persuasive speeches, as well as storytelling, interviews, debates, and other group work. The aim is to develop communication skills that contribute positively to each student&#8217;s personality.

STAGE DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION &#8211; Students receive experience and training in the various aspects of designing a stage set and constructing these designs. Elements of scene, lighting, and sound design will be covered to introduce students to various employment opportunities in technical theater. STAGECRAFT 1 &#8211; Students learn to design stage properties, hand controlled and robotic puppets, masks and practical elements of stage productions.
