George Robert Carruthers is an American inventor, physicist, engineer and space scientist. He invented the ultraviolet camera/spectrograph for NASA to use when it launched Apollo 16 in 1972.

Garrett Augustus Morgan, Sr. was an African-American inventor, businessman, and community leader. His most notable inventions were a three position traffic signal and a smoke hood notably used in a 1916 tunnel construction disaster rescue.

Sir Charles Kuen Kao was a Chinese-born Hong Kong, American and British electrical engineer and physicist. He helped discover the development and use of fiber optics in telecommunications.

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was an Indian physicist who made groundbreaking works in the field of light scattering. He discovered that when light traverses a transparent material, some of the deflected light change wavelength and amplitude.

My work has led to tremendous breakthroughs in plastics, telecommunications, chemical engineering and beyond. 

Walter has greatly extended the life span of plastic substances by helping to create new techniques for recycling and reusing plastics.

I was the first African American to earn a Bachelor of Science degree.

Carver’s biggest success came from peanuts. In all, he developed more than 300 food, industrial and commercial products from peanuts, including milk, Worcestershire sauce, punches, cooking oils and salad oil, paper, cosmetics, soaps and wood stains.

Margaret Ebunoluwa Aderin-Pocock MBE is a British Space Scientist and Science Educator. Since February 2014, she has co-presented the long-running astronomy television programme The Sky at Night.

I did not invent the bicycle frame but I patented a new development that is more recognised today.

Isaac R. Johnson is recognized as the inventor of a patented form for a folding bicycle frame that is recognizable as the common contemporary bicycle. However, few records exist of his life. He is famous for being a black inventor in the United States before the equal rights movements occurred. He patented his invention on Oct. 10, 1899.

Charles Henry Turner was an American zoologist, educator, and comparative psychologist, known for his studies on the behavior of insects, particularly bees and ants.

In 1955, Daly returned to Columbia, working closely with Dr. Quentin B. Deming on the causes of heart attacks. That work opened up a new understanding of how foods and diet can affect the health of the heart and the circulatory system.

I did not agree with the military segregating blood so I resigned from my post.

Charles Drew researched in the field of blood transfusions, developing improved techniques for blood storage, and applied his expert knowledge to developing large-scale blood banks early in World War II.

I was appointed president-elect of the Acoustical Society of America in 1997 and joined the National Academy of Engineering in 1998. 

James West is a U.S. inventor and professor who, in 1962, developed the electret transducer technology later used in 90 percent of contemporary microphones.

I was one of the first physicians to successfully complete pericardial surgery on a patient. 

Daniel Hale Williams was one of the first physicians to perform open-heart surgery in the United States and founded a hospital with an interracial staff.

I was the first African American female doctor to receive a medical patent.

In 1981, Bath began working on her most well-known invention: the Laserphaco Probe (1986) harnessing laser technology, the device created a less painful and more precise treatment of cataracts. She received a patent for the device in 1988, becoming the first African American female doctor to receive a patent for a medical purpose.

I worked to help bring about more diversity at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where I was the first African-American woman to earn a doctorate. 

Dr. Jackson conducted breakthrough basic scientific research that enabled others to invent the portable fax, touch tone telephone, solar cells, fiber optic cables, and the technology behind caller ID and call waiting.

Against all odds, Pakistan-born Hibah is a leading engineer at NASA. Currently, she is in the Engineering and Technology Directorate, supporting the NASA Launch Services Program (LSP) and working on expendable launch vehicles. She provides technical expertise, follows launch vehicle testing, performs data reviews and provides technical assessments of engineering issues.

I want to champion diversity in science in any way, shape or form.

Patrick Campbell has been at the Natural History Museum since 1986. When he was made a fish curator in the Zoology department, he became one of the institution&apos;s first black curators. Patrick spent 25 years caring for the Museum&apos;s collection of 800,000 fish specimens, before changing sections to reptiles in 2011 where he soon became a Senior Curator.

Mae Carol Jemison is an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. On June 4, 1987, Jemison became the first African American woman to be admitted into the NASA astronaut training program. On September 12, 1992, Jemison became the first African-American woman in space.

President Barack Obama awarded me the Presidential Medal of Freedom, America’s highest civilian honor.

Katherine Johnson loved math. Early in her career, she was called a “computer.” She helped NASA put an astronaut into orbit around Earth. And then she helped put a man on the Moon.

Famous black inventor and scientist Lonnie G. Johnson invented the super soaker in 1990 which has been among the World’s bestselling toy ever since. 

I was the first American Indian woman in the United States to receive a medical degree.

Susan La Flesche Picotte was first person to receive federal aid for professional education and she provided medical care at all hours of the day and night. As a child, she had watched a sick Indian woman die because the local white doctor would not give her care. Picotte later credited this tragedy as her inspiration to train as a physician, so she could provide care for the people she lived with on the reservation.

On Dec 6th 2019, I was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame.
