We were feeling the love in the library during the month of February as we kicked off the month with our Blind Date With a Book Contest! Students were invited to select one of our books and "rate their date" after they had completed it.

The much anticipated Avengers End Game opened this month and we caught the Marvel magic fever!  Even our students got going with some hand painted fan art!  And why not, because Marvel is marvelous!

Even though we love the library, it's great to get outside with Team Unbreakable and run 5km in the Run 4 Hope.  Our students (and staff) were amazing and won medals at this event.

We also celebrated Black History Month in a variety of ways. In addition to our books, bookmarks and display board, we also hosted a number of workshops, including a natural hair and skincare workshop by our friends at Loc N Twist and Elle Beauty!

Sora's summer reading program is back!  Our students can be anywhere this summer and still be able to take a book out to read on the #Soraapp!  And Sora adds some free new books to our collection so everyone wins!

THANK YOU! We would not be able to accomplish all that we have this year without the ongoing support of our amazing colleagues and admin team. Your consistent support of our ideas and initiatives has given us the confidence and courage to try new things and to think outside the box. The library is a busy and vibrant place and that is how we like it!

We really wanted to step our game up for Pride month this year and we really went all out with our display board and book selection! Pride month is a time to celebrate and be joyful in June!

And just in case you were wondering how the story ends.....it doesn't! The three fabulous ladies in the library learning commons will keep on reading, creating and working with staff and students into the 2019/2020 school year.  The magic never stops!  So this story is to be continued...

Feeling The Love in February!

We ended the month of May with our annual Board Game Day with our friends at Hewson.  Normally Springdale students attend as well but we had our hands full with three grade five classes from Hewson.  A great time was had by all!

Indigenous Education has been a big initiative of the library learning commons this year.  We have tried to provide students with a variety of opportunities to learn about Indigenous heritage and culture.  In May, we helped the PE department have a lacrosse day and we took students to the Indigenous Student Gathering, hosted by the Peel District School Board.

We are always very happy when Mark Newman comes to our school to present his books and talk about the harmful effects of invasive species! This year was extra special because it was Mark's birthday and we got him a cake and a card to celebrate. We enjoy having him in the library learning commons every year!

For the second year in a row, we brought back Order of Canada winner and Metis author David Bouchard as a guest presenter. The students loved him so much last year we had to bring him back for an encore performance!

To end our fun February, we hosted the Grade 9 Science classes for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Space Announcement!

Once upon a time there was a library learning commons, far, far away in the little town of Brampton. In that library worked three fabulous women who loved reading, creating and working with staff and students. This is the story of the magic that happened in the library learning commons in semester two at Louise Arbour Secondary School!

Even though it has just begun and the school year is ending, we will still be cheering for Team Canada, as they compete in the FIFA Women's World Cup! We also hope that Christine Sinclair will become the all time highest goal scorer in women's soccer history.

#TheLibraryLife - The Second Semester Story of Your Library Learning Commons

We treat our library learning commons like a lab and we are constantly experimenting and trying new things. We have a few ideas for next year that we would like to share with you! 1. The New and Improved Makerspace - Thanks to a great idea from Chrissy and Holly, we have moved our graphic novels section closer to the fiction and non-fiction sections to make way for our new permanent makerspace corner! We will be using the existing shelving to fill bins with all kinds of fun maker activities that students can access at all times. The makerspace cart will be used for our technology equipment (i.e. spheros, circuits, etc). We will also be running student/teacher learning sessions to show them basic sewing and how to use our new Cricut! 2. Going Paperless (as much as possible) - We will be tracking print credits, and new student cards electronically so we don't have to use as much paper in the library. It will also help speed up service at the desk. We already provide online resources to staff and students for research and referencing, but we are now moving more of our day to day operations online. 3. The Human Library - We will be hosting our first ever Human Library on Thursday, October 24th. We have invited a number of guests to speak about their life experiences and students can sign up to speak with one of our "books". Our goal is to give students an opportunity to interact with people that they might not interact with to reduce discrimination and stereotyping. This is only a small sample of the new initiatives we are bringing to the Library Learning Commons next school year!

We were ready to go all out for Day of Pink this year and ready to show our students that we want to put an end to homophobia and bullying.  Not only did we dress up our display board, we dressed up the LLC and ourselves!

We are the hub for clubs! This year we ran the Library Volunteers, the Milk Bag Mat Club, Peer Tutoring and the Team Crew all out of the Library Learning Commons. We were also a popular destination for meetings, the ASIST program, baby showers and our first official teacher retirement (Congratulations Taz!). It is one of our goals to be able to provide a space that people want to come to work, socialize, communicate, collaborate and celebrate! A welcoming, brave and inclusive space for all staff and students.

As a school of social justice, we are constantly trying to bring awareness to local and global issues. In March we celebrated World Water Day and National Nutrition Month. Access to water and food is a human rights issue.

This is the second year that we have participated in the "So They Can Go Home" baby moccasin project.  Our students have been learning about child apprehension in Indigenous communities and we made baby moccasins that will be sent to Dilico Anishnabek Family Care in Thunder Bay.

You've gotta fight....for your right.....to read books!  Ending off February and leading into March is Freedom to Read Week!  Celebrating 35 years of fighting for our right to read!

March is Women's History Month and we wanted to acknowledge and celebrate all of the fabulous and fearless Canadian women that we have to look up to!

For the first time ever, we celebrated Sikh Heritage Month as a Board and at our school. We have a large population of Sikh students so it was a great learning experience and will help us better understand our students.

We were proud to celebrate Asian Heritage Month and highlight the achievements of Asian Canadians across the country.  

Thanks to Mr. Eng and his year round donation of books, we were able to help our friends at Plowman's PS with their annual Book Shelf event.  All of the books that we donated were in mint condition and we know there will be lots of happy students taking home a book this summer.

We had another first in the library learning commons as this was the first year that we celebrated Jewish Heritage Month!

In addition to Pride month, June is also Indigenous History Month and we are proud to celebrate it.  Our goal for June was to #ReadIndigenousAuthors and showcase our collection of fiction and non-fiction books.  We also wanted to recognize the trailblazing achievements of our First Nations, Metis and Inuit activists, authors, athletes and more.

Lanny and I have been participating in the Board's Indigenous Education program for the past two years.  This year we developed an action plan to embed Indigenous Education in all curricular areas and we had our final meeting for the season in June, where we had an opportunity to get outside and learn on the land.

June was made even more joyful thanks to the Toronto Raptors winning the World Championship this year! Although we didn't get to attend the parade, we did watch it here in the library learning common and I'm sure we will be celebrating all summer long! Let's go Raptors!

We lit it up blue for Autism Awareness Month!

April is National Poetry Month and this year we had our annual poetry contest. The poets were so outstanding this year that we had not one, but three winners! Congratulations to Reagan, Angelie and Nidia for winning this year's contest! On February 6th we tried something new with our grade 9 Science classes. We had "Coding and Construction" makerspace activities that involved using the Sphero and navigating a maze and creatively building using Lego, Strawbees, Keva planks and more!

This month we took our grade 11 and 12 students to the University of Toronto (Mississauga Campus) for a library workshop and campus tour to give them a taste of what may lie ahead for them in their future!
