Teacher-created books

The children are getting enthusiastic about reading and can talk about their favourite books.

Every freely chosen reading engagement of over 1 minute during a whole day was logged. Some children read for up to 10 minutes. This includes focusing on the pages of a book, reading aloud, reading with friends and role playing story time. Reading along with iPads was also included although in April all children read straight from the paper books. 

We&#8217;ve been reading The Worst Witch by Jill Murphy.

We are a play-based classroom which means we have lots of fantastic play opportunities to choose from every day. Our teacher noticed that hardly any of us were choosing to read books despite the fact that we have a fabulous inviting reading area with a variety of books. She wondered why we never picked up the books. So she asked us.

Why would I choose a book when there is a sandpit?

There are too many books to choose from so I just play with the puppets.

Children know the books well and are choosing to engage in reading.

Some children said they would miss story time during the holidays, and many said nobody read to them at home. So Mrs Jalland decided to make videos of story time and send QR codes home for the holidays so that they could be read to on their parent&#8217;s phone or tablet. A story for every day. Many children enjoyed engaging in these stories during the holiday and are still talking about it.

These books are read regularly to the class. We also have a non-fiction section. These are updated according to demand.

This project has transformed the children&#8217;s reading engagement and use of vocabulary and storytelling.

As a class we&#8217;ve been writing our own stories by taking it in turns to add a sentence. We&#8217;ve also been making up our own Helicopter stories.

This is the story about how we transformed the reading culture in our classroom. In term 1 hardly any children freely chose to read. This has now changed. Data on increased engagements on page 12.

I like that me and my friend can read the same book and turn the pages at the same time.

There used to be too many books. Now it&#8217;s easier to choose so I read more.
