Thank you for checking out this inaugural edition of Location360°! Our goal for this mag is to turn it into a resource for "digital nomads" and "slow travel" fans. These terms may be foreign to some, so a brief explanation is in order. A digital nomad is one who uses digital tools - commonly laptop & Internet - to work from anywhere they see fit. Slow travel appeals those who see enjoy immersing and exploring other cultures beyond what the tourist trail has to offer.

While digital nomadism and slow travel are independent concepts, they are perfectly suited for each other. There are now more tools than ever in history to enable you to work from almost anywhere on earth. The ability to remove a fixed location as part of a work requirement is known as location independence.

In this edition, we'll showcase my current location, Antigua Guatemala, a beautiful colonial city well suited for slow travel. We'll also delve deeper into the concept of slow travel and lay out exactly what being a digital nomad is all about.

describe Antigua. At least for me anyway.

Quick Fact:
Antigua means "old" or "ancient" in Spanish. The city's original name, Santiago de Los Caballeros, fell into disuse when the capital was moved to a new location and people started referring to the city as "Old Guatemala".

Maybe Antigua's gorgeous weather year-round has something to do with it. I'm certainly taken with its magnificent colonial Spanish architecture, one that has earned it designation as a UNESCO World Heritage city. I love its beautiful church ruins, which stand as testament to Antigua's glorious past. Antigua's stunning volcano backdrop, doesn't hurt. This city has been described as as an open-air museum. I'm not inclined to disagree.

But for all its architectural wonders and relics, there's something else about Antigua that draws travelers in. This city is one of those places that invite exploration, always tugging at you to stay a little longer. It is the perfect Slow Travel destination.

La Merced Church, Antigua

Established in 1543 as the Spanish seat of government in the region, Antigua quickly became a popular destination for Spanish dignitaries and Catholic missionaries on assignment to the New World. At the height of Antigua's power and influence, the city boasted 38 churches, many of them magnificently appointed and well-renowned.




















A massive earthquake destroyed most of the city in 1773. Officials relocated the capital to where present-day present-day Guatemala City now stands.
