Chapter I

Northern Bulgaria
Northern Bulgaria which is also called
Moesia. It is located to the north of the main ridge of the Balkan Mountains which separates the country into a northern and a southern part. It includes several
sub-regions such as Dobruja, Ludogorie, Gerlovo, Zlatiya. Besides the Balkan Mountains, Northern
Bulgaria borders the Timok River and Serbia to the west, the Danube River and Romania to the north, and the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast to the east.

There is a legend about the 40 Bulgarian girls who tied their hair and jumped into the sea in order not to be caught by the Ottoman Turks. Kaliakra is one of them.

Kaliakra
Kaliakra is a long cape on the Bulgarian northern Black Sea coast. Information about the cape dates back to the 4th century BC, when the Thracian tribe of Tirisians lived on the place. They also give his first name - Thyrisis.
