On the Eastern shore of Maryland, Harriet Tubman was Born into slavery. The date of her birth is unknown but is estimated to have been between 1820 and 1825.
Harriet and her mother were owned by Mary Pattison Brodess. Her father, Ben Ross, who was owned by Anthony Thompson. She was one of nine children born to their enslaved parents.
Her original name was Araminta Harriet Ross, nicknamed minty. Her name would be changed after her marriage in honor of her mother who's name was Harriet " Rit " Green.

Harriet Tubman led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom through the underground Railroad. Risking her life going back and forth to help people.
In 2016 the the U.S Treasury Department announced that Tubman will be replacing Andrew jackson on the center of a new $20 bill although it did not last.
Tubman also helped the union Army in the American Civil war, working as a spy and many other things. After the war She dedicated her life to helping former slaves in a new life.
