By: Delaney Steinmetz 5E The Revolutionary war continues to rage in Vally Forge, Pennsylvania, which is too close to Hope's home. Her papa and brother finally return. But she finds out that Papa had joined the Sons of Liberty. Hope fears that her family is in terrible danger.
This story begins in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Hope and her family live there. On her tenth birthday, Hope's mama gave her a diary. It is made of beautiful blue fabric and carefully sewed in paper pages. Hope writes in her diary every day. And Hope's mom gave her a brass locket, inside there is an ink drawing of Papa and a lock of his hair.
In this book there are many characters including Mr. Dean, Hopes' uncle. He is in charge of the house when Papa is gone. Miss Sarah, a young widow who lost her husband in the war because he died of wounds and now she always wears black dresses. And Polly Adams, is Hopes best friend who actually turns out to be a Loyalest like her parents.
"HEY!"
"rebel!"
In this book there are also many settings. Here are some of them, Hopes house were Hope lives. The dressmakers' house were Polly and Hope secretly meet because Polly's parents think that Hope is a "rebel" so they can't talk anymore. And, the school house were Polly and Hope go to school.
In this book, I learned that life was hard as a child and as an adult too. The children always have work to do. They may need to milk the cow, feed the animals, help run an inn if their parents own one, or cut wood for the fireplace and many more. Adults need to take care of their children and their family. They might need to write letters to people, go to another village to buy supplies for their inn or tavern, or just make money. The women cook, wash clothes and help around the house. The father is the leader of the house. He needs to keep children from getting in trouble, make rules for the house and hunt for food.
