CHAPTER 5 LESSON 1
Ratios
A ratio is a comparison of two quantities.
The quantities in the ratio are called terms. The first term is a, and the second term is b (b ≠ 0).
A ratio can compare a part to a whole, a part to another part of the whole, or the whole to a part.
The quantities in the ratio are called terms. The first term is a, and the second term is b (b ≠ 0).
A ratio can compare a part to a whole, a part to another part of the whole, or the whole to a part.
When we express ratios in words, we use the word "to" -- we say "the ratio of something to something else" -- for example, the ratio of circles to triangles in the illustration above.
Chapter 5 Lesson 2
Unit Rates and proportional reasoning
The numbers or measurements being compared in a ratio are called the terms of the ratio. A rate is a special ratio in which the two terms are in different units. When rates are expressed as a quantity of 1, such as 2 feet per second or 5 miles per hour, they are called unit rates.
