Polygons, Area and Angles
Lesson 8:
Polygons
A polygon is a closed plane figure made up of line segments. These
segments are called edges or sides. The points where two edges meet are
called vertices (singular: vertex).

Polygons
Not Polygons
A polygon is named by the number of sides and angles it has.
A regular polygon has sides of equal length and angles of equal measure.
A regular polygon has sides of equal length and angles of equal measure.
Triangles
Triangles can be classified by various properties relating
to their angles and sides.
to their angles and sides.
Quadrilaterals
• Parallelogram: A four-sided polygon with two pairs
of parallel and equal sides.
• Rectangle: A rectangle is a parallelogram with
4 right angles.
• Square: A square is a rectangle with 4 equal sides.
• Rhombus: A rhombus is a parallelogram with 4
equal sides.
• Trapezoid: A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with only
one pair of parallel sides.
The types of quadrilaterals can be classified by
relationships of their sides and angles.
relationships of their sides and angles.
They are shapes with four sides.
Angles and Basic Geometric Ideas
Basic Geomtric Ideas:
An angle is formed by two rays that have the same endpoint.
We usually measure angles in degrees.
Types of Angles:
