What are earthquakes?
Thought Bubble
Earthquakes
- Are caused by the sudden movement of the ground that creates seismic waves. There are two types of earthquakes, tectonic earthquake and volcanic earthquake. Tectonic earthquakes are produced by the movement of plate tectonics while volcanic earthquakes are results of volcanic activity underground.
Seismic waves
- are waves that propagates through the Earth’s surface and interior, that is often a result from a tectonic movement or from a volcanic eruption.

Body Waves
P-Waves
-Also known as compressional waves. These waves' movement is back and forth thus makes the ground particles compress and dilate. These waves propagate through solid, liquid and gas. P-wave is a Body Wave, that makes it considered to have the ability of travelling through the Earth's interior.
S-Waves
- Also known as shear waves or transverse waves. This wave arrives into recording stations after P-waves. It has a higher amplitude than P-waves, thus making it more destructive among the body waves. This type of seismic wave can propagate ONLY through solids.
Surface Waves
Love Waves
- Is a Surface Wave that only travels through the Earth's surface. It's the fastest surface wave and moves the ground from side-to-side. Love waves produce entirely horizontal motion.
Rayleigh Waves
-This wave’s movement is a rolling motion, thus moving the ground up and down, imitating a wave rolling across a lake or ocean. During an earthquake, the vibrations being produced are due to the Rayleigh waves thus making it the most destructive seismic wave in history.

Seismic Stations
- A seismic station is a laboratory that has equipment that can detect,
monitor and record earthquakes locally or anywhere in the world. It has
different type of seismic instruments that can record earthquake waves
traveling trough the interior of the earth and its surface. It must have the ability to communicate effectively with other seismic stations and to share data.
Note: In the Philippines there are:
64 Satellite Telemetered (unmaned) Seismic Stations
29 Staff Controlled (manned) Seismic Station
7 Volcano Observatory and Station
